Sorry but Perfume is a very interesting movie.
Tell me why it sucked.

Kabluey- Lisa Kudrow, Scott Prendergast.
The family loser comes to help out his brother's family while the brother is in Iraq.
He ends up with a job as a corporate icon...probably the most forlorn icon in history.

A sweet, almost Lifetime-esque story but totally worth it for the scenes in the suit.

I think Primer might well be the King of Unknown Movies.
Made for almost no money, it has a concept and look that far exceed it's station.

Kontroll (2003)- A Hungarian thriller/comedy/music video.

Kontroll takes place entirely in the subway of Budapest and the story follows a gang of darkly comic- and totally weird- ticket inspectors as they deal with a public that hates and ridicules them. There is also (possibly) a serial killer on the loose who pushes people in front of trains but I couldn't tell if he was supposed to be symbolic or not.
Plus Bootsie the Runner, who reminded me of Jay from the Kevin Smith movies.

Never having been to Hungary, I have no idea how exaggerated or stylized this film is.

Entertaining weirdness though, not a great- maybe not even a good- movie but certainly worth a look.

I have taken nearly 5-6 hours on going through each & every posts, & i must bowdown to clocker & Idoleyes. :w00t: . I had a great time in reading your views on the films you suggested. All together i was able to list around 124 movies which i will be watching soon.

A humble contribution from my side Spring,Summer,Fall,Winter and Spring.

Well i guess most of them might have already watched this movie(please don't flame me) . It's a Korean movie & lifestory of a Buddhist monk. Great film, great location! For those who haven't watched it yet , give it a try.

If he agrees I shall screen it once in a rural theater in French Polynesia and post a lengthy review here.

Flash of Genius (2008)- Greg Kinnear.

In 1964, Dr. Robert Kearns filed for and and received a patent on the intermittent windshield wiper.
In 1969, Ford began using the system without bothering to pay Kearns for his invention...indeed, Ford claimed they themselves had come up with the idea.
Kearns, a man of great persistence and tunnel vision, spent the next two decades pursuing his case against Ford (and later, Chrysler) which he finally won in 1990 (against Chrysler, 1995).

This is a modern David and Goliath story and Kinnear brings the perfect blend of humility and arrogance to the character.
Humility in the sense that really all Kearns wanted was the admission that he was the inventor, arrogance in that he was willing to sacrifice everything- his wife leaves him halfway through his quest- in a seemingly hopeless fight against one of the world's largest corporations.

A simple and straightforward film, Flash of Genius glosses over the far more complex story of Kearns to make an object lesson of how right can triumph over might.
In a time when seeing the gray in the middle is fashionable, the unswerving black v. white of this story is refreshing.

Not a great movie but an interesting and uplifting story.
Watch it...you've wasted two hours in worse ways.

The Duchess Of Langeais

Has somebody heard of this movie?
I think it's the rarest among the movies I've seen.

Some people might go through hardships for love, but it's their
choices to live with it. How can we represent our pure feelings
so expressively under various of circumstances. It's a tragic story.

I recommend it for all who has their own beloved one. :)

Party Monster (2003)- Macaulay Caulkin, Seth Green.
Culkin is Michael Alig, "King of the Club Kids" and Green his mentor, James St. James.
Based on a true story, this movie is a vignette of New York in the late Eighties/early Nineties, when excessive drug use, all night raves and being "fabulous" were the stuff of life.
Alig reinvents himself as a party promoter and creator of superstars, much like Warhol had two decades earlier.
Warhol however, never killed anyone, Alig kills his drug dealer/superstar, "Angel".

It's hard to criticize the acting in a movie where every characters main ambition is to be as superficial and artificial as the real Club Kids were.
I guess it's a feather in Culkin's cap that it is obvious that somewhere under the artifice is a real person but the star of the movie is Seth Green (who would have guessed?).

There is a massive amount of drug use featured in the film but reportedly it was toned down from the actual events as the directors thought the real life consumption would be too hard to believe. Actually, the real giveaway that these are actors is that people who live on heroin, crack, Special K and roofies don't have such nice teeth.

It's slightly difficult not to see Culkin taking this role to put an end to the cute Home Alone kid but the movie is entertaining enough that this feeling soon goes away.

Weird, but worth seeing.

Observations :

Who the hell said Oldboy or Primer weren't well known?
I hate most art films because they are made by/for pretentious twats( and a lot of foreign films too because needless to say they are made for/by foreigners*) .
Office Space is well known because it is the only genuinely funny thing that Jennifer Aniston has ever done.
Adaptation is a Spike Jonze movie (or actually more rightly a Kaufman movie so at least there are brothers involved) and it's Coen.
I've finally, happily encountered someone whose speelling and punctuation are even worse than mine.

And anything Bavarian is a comedy even though most are unintentional.

* I think that's called absurdest humour or maybe just blatantly unfunny I can never quite distinguish between the two.

The Great Buck Howard (2008)- John Malkovich, Colin Hanks, Emily Blunt.

An unmoored and unhappy law school student (Hanks- yes, Tom's son), leaves school and drifts into the job of personal assistant to a washed up mentalist (Malkovich).

"Sweet" would be good adjective for this film.
All the characters get a chance to shine and even the peripheral folks are elevated above caricatures.
Malkovich, as usual, is wonderful to watch...I have to believe that Howard's trademark handshake was all his idea.

Also to it's credit, the movie resists the "feel-good" compulsion to completely tie up the ending and is more interesting because of this.

No explosions, robots or boobs, so most people probably won't like it.

Dark City (1998)

Saw this gem yesterday, and I advise anyone who enjoys dystopian other-worldly adventures to get and watch this at your earlist convenience. A stellar cast comprised of Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, Rufus Sewell and William Hurt plows through an epic trip where buildings are created every night as soon as they're thought, and all sorts of craze takes place.
Very highly recommended to people who enjoy things like Matrix and whatnot.

Actually the sequel was even better reviewed than the original and is one of the rare films to get 100% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes .It grossed almost $500 million worldwide, becoming one of the most successful animated film ever.

I'm a big fan of Thursday with Tom Jane and Aaron Eckhart. I made something funny like $5,000 in theatres and only a few hundred dvds were made originally. Years later it became available online and I'm glad it did as it's a great flick.

Green Street Hooligans

This was great! Basically its about a timid, mild mannered American (Elija Wood-frodo in Lord of the Rings) goes to England to visit his sister, and befriends the leader of a "Firm" (gang related to each soccer team). Very good story, and some gratuitous violence.

i would say look for anything before 1980 to find a hidden gem. one of my favorites is The Fighting 69th with James Cagney. real good war film that deals with issues like cowardice, patriotism, and sacrifice.

Many of my recommendations, I saw by chance and they genuinely blew
me away. There not exactly obscure but im certain that many havent seen.

Lone Star [ Over a decade before "No country for old men" came out... films like Lone Star were being made.]
Hunger, 2008 [Outstanding prison film!!!]
Fido [A refreshing variation on the exhausted zombie genre]
Code 46 [Fantastic! Forbidden love and sci-fi go hand in hand. Slightly reminiscent of "1984"]
One point [ Not bad but an interesting take on the dsytopian nightmare genre]
Twelve and Holding [ Fine film about the Loss of innocence and young adults distortion of reality]
Bound By honour, 1993[My guilty pleasure. A latino ganster 3hr epic set in the early 90s/LA....my fav period for these types of films.]
Diva [Stylish dark cyber punk movie that i cant recommend enough]
The beast of war [ Tyranical tank commander and his crew get lost in mountains of Afghanistan. "Das boot" on land hehe]

"On The Bowery" - Lionel Rogosin (B&W, USA, 1956, 65 mins.)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050800/

http://loudpaper.typepad.com/loudpaper/images/2008/01/18/on_the_bowery.jpg

A mix of documentary and scripted footage on the Bowery, New York City's skid row. Against a backdrop of men (and a few women) drinking in bars, talking and arguing, and sleeping on sidewalks, we have the story of Ray. He is younger and more vigorous than most on the Bowery. He arrives in Manhattan with a suitcase and a little money in his pocket. On his first night, he drinks himself into a stupor, falls asleep on the sidewalk, and is robbed of his suitcase. Over the next two days, we follow both Ray and the thief, who befriends him. Is there any hope Ray can get out of town and restart a life of work and sobriety, or is he stuck on the Bowery? Can the good thief help?
http://www.flarerecord.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/bowery1.preview.jpg

It is a film of indelible portraiture; the plot, as it is, exists largely to transfer our protagonists (and the camera) between congregations of winos, from gin mills to games of dominos around a flophouse common room’s pot-bellied stove, from a listless sermon at the Bowery Mission to bums in a side street squeezing a “Good morning” cup of pink lady from a can of Sterno. All throughout, the film looks hard at that which we’re accustomed to turning away from, exposing a litany of exploded hairdos, gardens of gin blossoms, trench-like worry lines, loose blubbery lips, toppled orthodontia, eyes glistening from burrows, noses pitted like no-man’s-land or broken across the bridge (even a couple of visages that are positively Beckettian). In numerous bar scenes, the atmosphere is palpable: the Rheingold on tap, the raw onions in the beards, the cracked-leather barstools soaking up rancid farts. – Nick Pinkerton, Glasses Full of Rye

Why would we call it Mayberry? Eagar was named after the founder of the town, old man Eagar.

Dude, there aren't any bus stops around here. We have to hitch hike to the nearest big town to see a movie, and then we hold a town meeting to tell everyone about it. :)

I actually like The Flame and the Arrow a lot more.Of course as far as Lancaster goes it would be hard to top Elmer Gantry,Birdman of Alcatraz or Atlantic City.

I just watched the most amazing unknown movie ever and am just dying to tell you all about it but then everybody would have heard and it wouldn't fit the parameters of this thread.
So then I thought I'd just post it in the regular movie thread but then no one would have seen it, so what's the point?

The Big Snatch - 1971

It would be one of the best movies that no one heard about if the list extends down to the 1,946,784th.

Jesus even if you restricted list to movies with big or snatch in the title it still wouldn't be in the top 20.

The Big Chill
The Big Lebowski
The Big Sleep (both versions)
Big Trouble in Little China
Big Fish
Little Big Man
The Big Country
The Big Bang
The Big Blue
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
The Big Heat
The Big Hit
The Big Clock
A Big Hand for the Little Lady

Snatch

In fairness it might be better than Big Mamma's House although you could probably say that of any film that isn't starring Martin Lawrence.

There are alot of good movies produced in Japan. They are not commonly seen in the western countries perhaps, but many are really good. Examples: Grave of the fireflies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095327/), My Darling is a foreigner (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1606197/).

I didn't know Michael Mann directed The Keep.I does have his fingerprints all over it though - dripping in atmosphere with a plot that takes forever to get going.
It's actually pretty scary though or maybe I'm confusing fear with me simply starting when suddenly awakening from dozing off.

Supposedly there's an extended version that helps in explaining everything a bit better but unfortunately I've never seen it.One reason to belong to CG I guess.

See also The Outpost (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892899/) .Nazis, horror, atmosphere and a more contemporary ( aka less suspense plot more gore) spin on marginally the same sort of thing.

I'll second that recommendation. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464141/ For those who need a recognizable name involved to get interested in a movie with subtitles, it was produced by Guillermo del Toro (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0868219/).

For those willing to give subs a chance, Largo Winch (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808339/) is a pretty decent French Action/Thriller (And,yes, I did actually put French, action, and thriller in the same sentence).

La Femme Nikita .Le salaire de la peur(The Wages of Fear) remade quite well as Sorcerer by Bill Friedkin as was Nikita by John Badham as Point of No Return .Taxi not to be confused with the one with Queen Latifah,Subway -Christopher Lambert before he was Connor MacCloud and let's not forget Leon the Professional.

Largo Winch looks interesting, might check it out. Very skeptical about the rating on IMDb though.

Let's just hope the French don't talk so fast. I found Inglorious Basterds very hard to watch, in the end I can't remember if I didn't enjoy it because I missed to plot - actors talked so fast - or because it was over hyped.

IdolEyes787
08-17-2011, 11:48 AM
Except for a couple of extremely well directed scenes Inglorious Basterds isn't half the movie that The Dirty Dozen is.True story.

I also get Largo Winch on one of my cable channels and although I'm sure it's good ,it's to me one of those foreign-made shows where the sensibilities are just alien enough that when the action is taking place you wind up scratching your head more times than naught.
Or I may just be slow.Either way I can't get into it.

In Tarantino's defense he did attempt to have a different take on WWII. After reading the "Trivia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361748/trivia)" on Inglourious Basterds the casting seemed a little out of the ordinary, Simon Pegg and Adam Sandler? Is he really off his rocker?

Not only was Gerard Depardieu so drunk when he boarded a flight from Paris to Dublin last night that he took his dick out in front of everyone and pissed down the aisle, but they hadn’t even taken off yet. They had barely even left the gate. There was like a 15 minute window between getting on the plane and being able to walk around and use the bathroom, and as soon as that began he instantly gave up and started pee’ing on everything around him.
Awesome, right?
The Daily Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2026990/Gerard-Depardieu-urinates-plane-cabin-hes-refused-permission-to-toilet.html?ito=feeds-newsxml) says…

The drunk 63-year-old actor called out ‘I need to piss, I need to piss’ as the flight was preparing for take-off.
But cabin crew told him that because the plane was taxiing to the runway he would have to wait until they were airborne and the seat-belts signs had been turned off.
So instead, he stood up, unzipped, and relieved himself in the cabin - to the horror of fellow passengers.

They also provide an eyewitness account, thankfully.

‘An air hostess told him he’s had to wait 15 minutes until we were in the air and he could leave his seat.
‘She told him there was nothing she could do until then and that he would have to hold it in.
‘But he replied that he couldn’t wait, then he just stood up and urinated on the floor.’

I dunno about you but I'd pay 12 bucks to see that.
