Best Buy, Netflix Dumps HD-DVD

As the Consumer Electronics Show began, Warner Bros. announced that it would drop support for HD DVD during the first half of 2008. Shortly thereafter, HD DVD experienced its worst-ever week of sales. Today, HD DVD was dealt a couple of big body blows: Netflix announced that it would stop renting movies in the HD DVD format and Best Buy has decided to exclusively recommend Blu-ray players to consumers.

The success of Blu-Ray is surprising me more and more every day.

I thought for sure that HD-DVD would win out by riding the coattails of the name alone.

Sony really took the format war when they bought Warner Brother's support, right under Toshiba's nose, for half a billion dollars. Up until that point, HD-DVD was the format that was going to take it all - on the verge of signing WB's loyalty for $100 million.

But for Sony's vicious (and very effect) move, we might be talking about the death of Blu-ray right now.

Besides people owning a PS3 for the sake of games, I don't personally know anyone that has neither a blue ray or an hd dvd player.

This includes family, friends (college age), and friends of family (who range from all over in terms of location and free capital).

How many people do you know (directly) that own either a HD Dvd player or Blue Ray player (not including a PS3 that if used only for games)

I know zero people that own a HD-DVD or Blu-ray, including PS3.

In fact, I know people that didn't even have a DVD player until about two years ago.

I have no plans to buy either in the near future. I am very happy with my standard DVD collection on a player that can upscale.

The smart ones are waiting for the two formats to fight it out and wait until one prevails.

No one wants to buy an HD-DVD player for $800 and 18 months later they've lost the war and no one carries or even releases movies in the format.

There have been too many dangers to choose the losing side and what we've read about incompatible BluRay players to future format revisions makes me glad I didn't buy any of those either.

It's sad to see that this fight had to be won (or lost) by the bribes Sony issued out and we all can expect that they want that money back sooner or later.
