Me and a mate are trying to set up WM to transfer files directly to each other (usually large wav files). We have set up WM and we can send messages but when I try to send a small 2 meg file a message says that it is blocked and to talk to my ISP. I don't think it can be my ISP as they seem to let edcent size e-mils go through without problem.

We both have adsl and both use Norton firewall which is set to permit all on WM.

Any ideas?

4.7 is pertaining to "Windows Messenger". An imbedded default instant messaging client for XP systems only using the .NET passport service. Basically the same as "MSN Messenger6". Which is for all other platforms. If there are truely any real differences at all between the two, I would not know. Though I have made the mistake of installing MSN messenger version6 thinking that it was an upgrade, however it only ended up installing it side-by-side with windows messenger. You can only be signed into one or the other at one time anyway. Basically it just adds clutter to your system tray.

If you have XP and version 4.7, you are up-to-date.

On another note- I use Norton IS 2003 and have had the same problems trying to up/download files with friends. I have even tried disabling the software and went so far as opening all of my ports and changed a few other modem/internet connection tweaks- nothing.

k there are 2 things you can do:

kk first a question
does your messenger disconnect after a while if you're afk?

if it does, update to msn6 it worked this program

second, this problem is due to that because you have adsl you dont have an actual public ip (same problem i have)...

i couldnt transfer files either, like SMALL images and stuff...
however, since i changed to msn 6, it seems to got fixed...i guess msn6 got a protocol that runs by the fact that u dont have a public ip..

and yes, i changed from windows messenger to msn6

What version do you have and what version does your mate have?

Version 4.7 will not transfer files to version 5.0 or 6.0. Dont ask me why, its just a bug.

However 5.0 will transfer to 5.0 and 6.0. I suggest you or your mate update.
I too have encountered this problem and upgrading sorting things out.

Hope this helps,
Steve

Me have the same trouble with file trans in MSN6. All uploading with my internet is phucked up. Me ISP says it sumthin wrong on the line. Me can upload max 58 kb's to the net...
So it not hurt to talk to your ISP anyways...

I've experienced the same problem with all version's of Messenger (both Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger) and haven't been able to figure out why it's such a pain either :-( The only posibilities I can see causing the transfer's to fail are...

The network that Messenger run's on is busy and can't cope, or...

A problem on either end of the connection between yourself and the person your transfering file's to/from (possibly due to traffic on either ISP's end).

All I can recommend is sending by E-Mail if your server allow's any file size, or splitting the file's into smaller segment's and sending them 1 by 1 that way.

Do you have a firewall?
You may need to open some ports.
