it's pretty weird you don't have nano.
if you are on CentOS or Fedora:

yum install nano

if you are on Debian or Ubuntu:

sudo aptitude install nano

If so, login with your root account and type this:

If you have already installed nano, add the other user to the sudoers file:

nano /etc/sudoers

then paste this at the bottom of the file:

To save the changes in nano use ctrl+o and to exit from nano ctrl+x . All the commands for nano are shown at the bottom when you edit a file :P

Then logout from root and login with your user and follow the steps of this setup guide where you left it.

Go a probelm... Firefox (Ice ferret) doesn't start. There isa flash of white around the xterm window then nothing.

If i try to run it from shell I get (firefox-bin:19714): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

Yep, your tutorial is really great. These are my first steps with linux and it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I think it's thanks to your tut, that my experience was rather gentle. type in a terminal:

$ df -hand you will se the available space. If the available space is much lesser than you expected you will have to clean the trash folders:


$ sudo rm -rf /home/<username>/.local/share/Trash/files
$ sudo rm -rf /home/<username>/.local/share/Trash/info
Also check the advanced settings of utorrent:
gui.delete_to_trash must be set to false.

Hmmm, if you can't run any command there is nothing you can do. Try restarting the server from your manager, if that doesn't work submit a support ticket and wait for a reply.

I think you are doing good, that's how fluxbox works. You have to click on any blank space of the desktop to see the fluxbox menu.

Well, the upload speed usually depends on the amount of leechers, and also depends on the ratio seeders/leechers, that is if the torrent in question has more seeders than leechers you will "struggle" against the other seeders to upload every bit :P

I usually check the peer table on the torrent description page if it's available (not all trackers has that feature). Take into consideration that some of the leechers could be really partial seeders and that's why it's a good habit to check the peer table.

These are my settings:

If you have followed this guide to set up your seedbox you haven't installed any desktop, neither kde nor gnome.

What do you see when you right click on grey blank page? Please post a screenshot.

If you want a full desktop please read the previous page here, I've already posted how to install xfce which is a ligther desktop than gnome.

I had the same issue and looked at the services running.
Utorrent was still running but taking quite a lot of CPU ressources 98% lol
Each time WebUI is unavailable was for the same reason.

The memory came from Utorrent running under Wine...so I switched to rTorrent and since then no problem.

Problems I solved to get this working on a Debian Linux Server from server.lu:

Use vnc4server instead.

Could not install wine at all. You will have many dependency errors and what not. This is how you can solve it.

First install:

apt-get install lmza

(This is to avoid the dpkg error)

Then follow these instructions and install this repository. I used the Lenny one.

I almost pulled my hair out with this one, I had my download directory in my home folder and it just wasn't working, I even chmoded and sshed and changed all the permissions.

Do NOT name your directories with separate names i.e. "My Downloads". Keep it one word to prevent this error.

I used this guide to configure seedbox. But my ISP has done various problems. Sometimes I had a slow speed with FTP, sometimes I could not even connect to the vnc, sometimes connected, but nothing can be done, the low speed. At last time speed FTP fell to 10-50 KB. I configured vpn between me and seedbox, and everything was working as expected. I think such problems not only for me. I suggest to add another guide on configuring vpn.

I get to the utorrent point and then it's a no-no. Using debian 5.0 I downloaded utorrent and wined it.. installation came up and I seleceted to not install utorrent. Problem is.. it's not running. I get a bunch of error messages in Wine from options and stuff in the install but that's it.

im 2/3 of the way through and most things have gone well, i have fluxbox and utorrent up and running and can kind of connect through FTP.

My issue is I can only connect to FTP when i edit the vsftpd.conf file and set ssl_enable=NO

If I set ssl_enable=YES
and then type vsftpd i het
500 OOPS: SSL: cannot load RSA private key

The key is there i know i remember creating it but something has gone wrong, how do i kill the current key and create a new one?

There's a typo in the guide (well, there's numerous errors & typos in the guide) and it's been a while but the line should be:

openssl req -x509 -nodes -days 365 -newkey rsa:2048 -keyout /root/vsftpd.key -out /root/vsftpd.pem

Edit: You shouldn't need to kill the current key, it'll overwite it.

It could be a case of X Windows starting up, but fluxbox not starting up. Might want to make sure fluxbox is installed, then go through step 5 again to make sure it's configured correctly.

Very very helpful guide, I had setup my seedbox and it was working fine, then all of a sudden about a week ago I had VNC close down on me and each time I try to connect to it, it just says "Connection closed", so I thought I would kill the process in Putty, so I type in "vncserver -kill :1" and it comes up with this message

You'll have to kill the Xtightvnc process manually

I followed the steps below, but when I typed in "iptables -F" Putty just froze, and now I am unable to connect to my seedbox :cry:


Troubleshoot: Your server might came with a firewall installed, which would block the VNC connection attempt. We'll setup a firewall later in the guide, so for now we can disable this firewall if it exists. To find out, type the following in Putty while login as root to list the filter table of iptables:

On centos 5.3 I wasn't able to get the VNC server running at all, tried changing the host name and still got the connection refused. Nothing was appearing in the logs. Did a full clean install (not just yum remove) and same problem. Tried on two different users and the same issue. Tried using the kimsufi box host but never worked either. Any ideas?

cool dude it was working anyway i installed older ver and it workes 1.8.4 ver doesnt work with this.

Everything has worked well until coming to the step 3 (Install softwares) :

I'm a total n00b to linux but read this guide and thought it worth a go. I'm stuck though on what is probably something very simple. I got to step 6 installing utorrent. I have it on the server but when i type wine utorrent.exe it comes up with the installation wizard. This confused me as the guide says cancel install, when i do that how do i then launch utorrent if its not installed?

xterm does show an error:
Xlib: extension ''generic Event Extension'' missing on display '':1.0''

The guide is great btw... just hope I manage to learn something from it

Had the same problem. It's not covered in the guide, so don't blame yourself. :-)

Just type "wine utorrent.exe /noinstall" and you'll be done.

Don't forget the space between utorrent.exe and /noinstall. ;-)

In this command, "wine" calls the program wine, "utorrent.exe" is the program Wine has to launch, and "/noinstall" is the option. They are three separate words.

It did help, thanks a lot and you got it right.. i missed the space :whistling

Just gotta sort out how to install additional ip's in ubuntu now and i should be done. Any ideas?

We are sharing the seedbox so wanted to have a unique ip each user to prevent problems with trackers.
I got 4 ips from kimsufi so wanted to assign them to users. There is info in section 9 of the tutorial but says:
Configure Multiple IP Addresses
(Only for Fedora Core/CentOS right now)
Nothing that I can find for Ubuntu. I'm on Ubuntu server 9.10 btw

or

Append text as follows:

Save and close the file.

Restart the network:

Great tutorial, thanks for taking the time to compile this.
I however unfortunatly came accross a problem on installing wine, i am running debian 4.0 and when i try apt-get install wine i get this message.

The following packages have unmet dependancies.
wine: depends: libwine-print (= 1.0.0-1~bpo40+1) but it is not going to be installed.
E: broken packages

edit - Ok ive tried this
# apt-get build-dep wine

Debian 64-bit users will need some extra packages:
# apt-get install libc6-dev-i386 lib32z1-dev Then i installed as normal
Now when i check my version i have 1.0 now should i upgrade the wine to 1.7 as i ve seen there may be problems with 1.0 or do i need to upgrade to debian 5.0?

Thanks Yuuko, now this is getting embaressing but ive came accross another problem which is connecting with vnc viewer, all im getting is failed to connect to server.
This is what ive put in, ive changed ip obviously but looks the same.

Also i got my server details last night which i have logged in and done part of the installation but it says on the email

Server name: %$*%*
(active in 24-48h)
Its the active in 24-48 hours i dont understand, is this maybe why i cannot connect with VNC and cant finish this installation?

Edit eventually got through to OVH they say the server is fine and ready to use so its a problem from my side :(

If you connected to your and worked on your server, your server should be active.
The 24-48 hours delay is for all dns servers to the world to acknowledge the existence of your server.
The IP you have to use is your server ip with :1 at the end.
So according to the information you give, it should be %$^&:1. You can try with %$*%*:1 (the server name).
Maybe is it just a configuration problem...

Can you give me the exact error message from your VNC client ?

I have a problem with VNC.
Everything was running fine but VNC appears to have crashed and refuses to be killed or restart.

$ vncserver -kill :1 gives me

Can't find file 'MYSERVER'.com:1.pid
You'll have to kill the Xvnc process manually

If I try to start the vnc i get:
Warning: MYSERVER.com:1 is taken because of /tmp/.X1-lock
Remove this file if there is no X server MYSERVER.com:1

Reached the point of logging into VNC, Xterm does appear in the Fluxbox menu, but clicking on it and nothing happens.

what os you are on? maybe installing it separately can solve the problem...
for ubuntu/debian: apt-get install xterm
fedora/centos: yum install xterm
make sure you are using your (#)root account...

I've tried with Deluge and qbittorrent. Both are able to download but didn't uploaded a single byte. Please help.

Have you considered the possibility no one might want the files you have right now? On certain private trackers (and you didn't name the one you're talking about) it might take a long period of seeding before you upload anything, server uber-pipe or not.

Anyway, try the simplest thing first. If you want to discard a technical issue, just load a Linux ISO or any popular public torrent. You should be uploading within minutes.

any idea on when the encryption info will be updated? im keen to get a seed box and also use it for usenet and an nzb index with a mate, but want to encrypt the drive first. i will use ubuntu, and will i need to make a seperate partition and then encrypt that, as you cant encrypt the os partiton? of have i missed something?
