I just received an email:

Dear AOM Member,

your wonderful and magic site got hacked and your whole database including email addresses ip addresses forum posts private messages and personal messages got stolen. We contacted the AOM Staff over that but got no reply.

AOM staff please contact us and we tell you how to fix this security hole in your site because it still exists... so you and your members are safe again, we also advise you to get some security experts into your team cos there is a lot more bugs in the sourcecode of your tracker software.

In this instance sadly one of our Staff members decided it would benefit us to invite all AOM members, however i took notice of this fast enough and could stop it so only 100 or 150 members got an invite message and this has been stopped and our Staff member wont do it again nor are we giving out the Database to anyone.

This is the only mail you will ever get from us we wont contact you again or bother you but we felt the need to inform you all (most of you already know) about this breach of your privacy.

Please continue with the great site and team you have at ArtOfMisdirection (what a great name for a site) i´ve been a member ever since filefight and I wish you guys all the best and hope to run a site as cool as yours one day.

Greets,

salad.tl team

Lets hope. The site doesn't need this type of attention. This post was useless and should of been kept private(They have a forum and a staff inbox). I don't think AOM wants or needs all this attention on FST. I do agree with why they don't want members who are not magic experts. Give these AOM threads a rest please.

I doubt many trackers care about their rarity. aom probably just wanted to have a good small community

:OAh yes.. Thats the whole point. Only magic experts. If your not an expert, then AOM doesn't pertain to you.

Every BT Tracker has it's fair share of problems(Don't use that excuse). The admin already explained the requirements. Members apart of AOM, should keep AOM news, within AOM(I said it three times lol). If the admin wanted this news out, she would be a comm rep here and share it with us(But thats not the case). Also I think it was really nice of her to explain the whole sign-up situation with us, even though there was not any requirement to do so. Shows that they care and actually respect their members (Or people wanting to be members). If your Magic expert contact AOM. If not, be happy and let live. You won't become a member there.

These people stole the database I guess that is not considered malicious in your eyes, but it could be used for a bunch of other things like for example spam.

If these hackers really cared they would of found the hole and reported it with out having to steal the database and emails.

I feel sorry for the site but this has happened to so many sites in the past few months that I hope site coders start to really look at there site security before anything else.

Dear AOM Member,

... i´ve been a member ever since filefight ...

Greets,

salad.tl team

But of course you are, hacking the site from inside is much easier, isn't it?

Don't be fooled with salad's gracious and kind full message, if he gave a *!#@ he would personally and privately notify the admins and not send a world-wide-spread message to all the users...

Then again, i do not think these guys mean any harm, they just want to show the community that AOM is not that great and get other site owners scared while showing the world who's on top. if i was a 15-years wanker i would probably do the same thing... :)

Personally, if i was the owner, first i would be terrified, probably take the site offline to the garage, try to figure out how the hell it happend.
Once the mistery is unfolded, i would track down these guys down, if they are members they must have left trails, but then again, it seems that the guys only know their way around magic... Probably the site is still up.

And as we already know, magic will not solve this one out!!!

The act itself was both illegal and malicous, but they aren't trying to extort anything, and they aren't releasing the data. They are simply trying to drum up buisness for their 'group/company/whatever', hoping aom would hire them to fix the 'flaws' they found. Its mis-guided, but in their eyes, they were just trying to help. It was a selfish move on their part though to go through with the hack.

Hi all,

News travels fast.... unfortunately. I think this is just the sad result of being successful. Nobody wants their site to be hacked. We have 4 experienced securitie guys on board but if its possible to hack the governement, it sure is possible to hack our site.

We should be thankful to those ****** from SALAD. It enables us to improve our security even more. I wish I could eat them raw...!

Dude I had that crappy tracker a long, long time ago and I never downloaded a file and I let it get disabled by inactivity. Is just a magic tracker lol. That's how good it is.

People like you sure make me laugh. In case you haven't noticed I'm about content not rarity :P. And Crappy trackers like AOM that pretend to be the shit and do stuff like opening fake signups to get more popularity make me laugh even more.

Thrill me? Why do I make you laugh? This is not a laughing matter I speak about. You should appreciate the fact that people take the free time out of their lives to bring you or me any content at all. I sure do.:P

saulin
03-07-2008, 07:35 PM
Because you said I want in. You obviously don't know me plus I have access to the best trackers already. I have been around for over a year with private torrent sites.

I guess there is a little for everyone. I mean people that like gay porn look for gay porn, people that like rock music look for rock music, people that like jazz look for jazz music. I guess some people like magic too but I guess that's not really the point. The point is that a lot of people want it not because they like magic but because they would like to trade it for other trackers.

Yes I do apreciate the fact that some people bring me great content. I have donated to about 4 torrent sites. Underground-Gamer for example. The content is well simply kick ass. Not just any tracker has it and is content that interests me. But since is usually open for signups is not a tracker that people would really care defend like you defended AOM or liek they would defend some rare trackers.

Tokeman
03-07-2008, 08:03 PM
saulin, aom has unique content, and if you were into magic, then you'd appriciate the content they offer. Obviously you had other motives when you 'were a member', not saying you were looking to trade it, but most people want aom because of the unique magic content they provide, and you don't appear to be looking for magic related content. Makes me wonder...
They keep the signups closed to keep the site full of active members who will actually use the tracker, and enjoy it for what it is, not to drive up rarity. If you had been paying any attention over your whole 1 year of experience in private trackers, you'd realise that admins do not care about how rare their sites are, closed signups are done for other reasons, and each tracker that closes has its own reasons for doing so.

saulin
03-07-2008, 08:23 PM
Some sites do and I think AOM is one of them actually, look at their actions with the fake open signups lately and then deleting everyone. It kind of looks like they just want attention and they want to make themselves feel as a very private site and of course that makes people want to get it more so they can trade it.

Now sites like F*** or UK-T and FTN just want to keep it simple and they would never open signups. They don't care about popularity. At least F*** and UK-T don't. Their contents may suck but they want to be as private as possible.

Then there are the best trackers which are either open for signups and/or are easy to signup or get an invite for. They really don't care about how private or rare they are and they probably are getting profits by donations so they keep a good user database or make sure to keep invites open.

A small tracker does not mean it is the best. A rare tracker is not the best because it is hard to get. In fact a tracker that lacks users ends up with poor content and slow speeds. But I do believe that in order to gain popularity some trackers will go as far as closing signups, removing invites for long periods of time and getting rid of users. People want what they can't have. Then when they need more users to date they open registrations or open signups through invites.

You know the most wanted trackers are the harder ones to get. Not the ones that have the best content or speed or pre times.

I gave away a lot of trackes I didn't use and I let many get disabled by inactivity. I know I have the best ones now so I don't think there is anything I need at the moment, plus I'm more into newsgroups right now. AOM was one of the ones that never got my attention. I remember back then they opened registrations and I signed up and it was well just weird crap that didn't interest me. I don't think I ever downloaded a file so it's one of the ones I just let died.

One more thing. For small trackers people like to use the word community since the content sucks usually and to try to give it a reason so that it can keep some value when trading. Why do I say that? Because I have been watching this closely for a while and there is people that have every tracker except the level 9-10 and they start a story about how they would love to be part of such great community and how they always wanted to be a part of it. Then they might get in and start trading.

I came here last week to appologize for the inconvience and I told everybody here that they could contact me if they feel that they are potential good members for AOM, being experienced magicians. Guess how many of the 500 members that signed up contacted me? 6. Doesnt that say enough? The rest of the almost 500 members must have been there to trade their membership later on.

Tell me what our secondairy gain would be if we really have fake openings? We share high quality stuff at our site and most of that uploaded stuff was bought by our members. We are not looking for new members. At the moment we have 780 members and 60% of them visit every day. We select our members with great care as we know the material that is shared is very valueble, in every way. Memberships are free so there is no financial advantage for us. With every member we set up, we take a risk of precious secrets leaking on internet. Do you really think that we are waiting for 500 new and potential non-magic members? We have always preferred to be a small but high quality community. The reason why there is nobody that wants to trade invites is that its forbidden to do so. If a member recommends a friend who is invited in, he will lose his membership if this new "so called friend" is not doing good. So tell me... what does it take to make you see other TRUTH?

Well is nice to hear from someone that runs the tracker I assume?

Anyways that's a nice explanation. I wasn't aware that you came here and asked for anyone that is a magician and is interested in joining to contact you. But I was referring to 2 or 3 times that the site had opened signups and then all accounts were deleted. That seemed like just a way to gain attention.

And I was right. So about 1% actually felt some ineterest in joining after signing up. Trackers like AOM are not for everyone and is obvious that most people interested in joining well just want to trade the account later. Is the same for all rare trackers. As for trying to keep it a secret place. Maybe requesting to take the tracker off the rarity list would be a good start. That's what the admin at Tophos did and you don't see so much talk about this tracker or people wanting to trade for it.

See when people here. AOM is open for signups, they rush to get an account. Once the accounts get deleted, they start new trading posts and they want it for is rarity value not because they need it or want to be a part of it.

I think the best way to keep a tracker private is by no advertising obviously and banning members who invite bad users to cut the tree from the root. Well I hope some people now realize that kind of tracker this is and that is not meant for just anyone. I never liked it because I'm not into magic and I signed up when it had opened signups a long time ago. Before it even was in this trackers list hosted at FST.

Thanks for the explanation. It seemed to me like the open signups were intentionally made :)

Hi Saulin,

Im very happy that I have been able to convince you. To be honest.. when the 500 members came in, I never understood where they came from. They all signed up within a few hours. After searching I found out that the link was posted on FST so that is why I responded to the frustrated members and try to explain what happened.

I think you now understand what I have been trying to tell you guys. We never ever have open signups unless something was wrong.

I think you just gave a GREAT hint. I will contact 1 of the staff members to ask to remove it. I never thought about that before so thank you for that!
I hope they will cooperate and that people will start to forget about AOM and within a few months if somebody talkes about AOM, everybody will ask "who or what is AOM? :) We prefer to stay invisible.

Thanks again for understanding.

Hi there, well firstly I'm glad you came here and I respect that very much and no I don't believe all that crap about "fake open signup" ect... BUT your quote of only 6 people contacted you out of the 500-600 that originally signed up, i thnk that is crap.. no offense... Reason be, well I signed up from the link yes I found here at FST, then hopes were dashed when my acc was deleted for nothing. So why would I contact AOM again looking for an acc ? I'm not a pro magiCan but yet I'd like to dabble but but I don't see that a point in contacting U as I'm not a pro or don't know that much, I was hoping it was kinda a bitme but only for magic where I could learn.

Also U Jaq came on here the other night refering to the AOM coding and even posted a small bit if I'm not misteken and also saying you know nothing about it...you put it here in public.
You reckon that might have given the incentive to some hackers to try their luck against AOM?

Good luck in getting things sorted out!

AOM was one of the ones that never got my attention. I remember back then they opened registrations and I signed up and it was well just weird crap that didn't interest me. I don't think I ever downloaded a file so it's one of the ones I just let died.

Did you just read your own post. This quote is exactly why Jacky and AOM do not want new sign-ups other then someone who could really bring something to the table and is an active learner of magic. Out of 500 members most would probably let it die. You just said it yourself.

YOU felt as though the content they had, didn't mean anything to YOU. It is weird and crappy. Not to that Magic Expert(It's probably pure gold). They would cherish this so called "Weird" and "Crappy" material you spew about.

So I think Jacky made her point clear and well. I also respect her for even trying to explain why all the 500 plus new accounts got deleted. I don't think everyones intention who signed up, was for the purpose of being able to trade their accounts, but I bet you 60% of the new members had this intention (Again i'm speculating). Also she stated very clearly.

If you feel as though your an expert and can offer something. Content then and the'll make you a brand new account after doing a minor background check(TO make sure you have the Expertise in magic, that you claim to have). Nothing but happy faces eh?:D:D:D:):):)

Hmm. I don't know why I don't feel this way on the matter you speak about in the above quote. I'm about the community, I have those trackers. I don't want or would ever, ever, EVER trade my accounts their(Or accounts period ever). Hmmmm.. I smell *cough*:shit:*cough* in the air.;)

@ fisherman: imagine that you have been into magic for many years and you know there is a dedicated tracker for magic called AOM and you had your chance of signing up and see what goldmine is behind those closed walls... the next time you try to log in your account has been disabled. wouldnt you at least try your best to contact the admin, explain that you understand that this was not intended to be and try to convince us that you you would really really love to be a part of the community? if you cant imagine this.. than think about your most favourit thing on internet you could have access to and there are only a few site which offer this. can you still tell me that you wouldnt at least give it a try to get in anyway?

some of the FST members said AOM opened up to retrieve their passwords. the fact that i talked about coding was only to explain that all passwords are coded and that it is almost impossible to crack these. i am not into the technical part of the site. no matter what i will say to explain, their will always be members (not you specific, but in general) that believe in conspiracy and bad intentions. perhaps this tells more about the people who rather want to believe their own twisted minds than the most logical explanations.

@ krunktastic: either you are an AOM member or very smart! :yup: or perhaps both :D

@ grimms: although you are not an AOM member i know you are very understanding, smart and helpfull! :fst:

Hi Saulin,

We prefer to stay invisible.

Hello Jacqueline. You prefer to stay invisible? http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/f-bittorrent-43/t-aom-open-but-a-mistake-new-account-deleted-281070/page4#post2703095

In that post(which you've now shrewdly edited) you listed out a bunch of encrypted passwords of AOM for ALL of FST to see. So you're directly contradicting yourself by saying that you wanna stay invisible which is obviously NOT the case.

Another key point here is that if you truly wanted to be invisible then you wouldn't feel the need to constantly post about your 'open signup glitch' and be apologetic about it. Frankly speaking, you simply wouldn't care if you wanted to be invisible.

Trust me it's them wanting to believe their own rhetoric (Twisted minds is a good way to define it). Thanks i'm very smart, honest, helpful(When I can be) and I try to be understanding (Sometime people are TOO dumb to be helped, I try though). You got me down to a tee.:D

Guess how many of the 500 members that signed up contacted me? 6. Doesnt that say enough? The rest of the almost 500 members must have been there to trade their membership later on.

people didn't applied cause they know you're very strict and they have very low chance to success, so they just giving up in advance.
I asked you once
how much from your all appling are approve ??? 3%???

you demand "highly experience" and no one is david copperfild here.
what about some guys who volunteer hospitals and just wanna make little smile to some injured kids by some magic???
I find it more more important then people who start searching magic material in wiki or any other website just so they can apply and look like "highly experience".
believe me... 70% from your members are amateurs.

Please don't make any more stupid posts like this. Jacqueline is here to clear up any confusion with AOM having open sign ups, she doesn't need a hateful post like this just because you are angry that you can't join AOM. Sorry to break it to you kid but they don't want collectors, they want magic lovers. You should feel privileged that she is taking the time to come on FST, which is crawling with 13 year olds like yourself, and respond to comments like this.
PS: encrypted passwords - note the first word before 'password'

Wow,where do i begin to respond to your incredibly hateful post?
First, you call me stupid and then go on to accuse me of being an angry 13 yr old.

Your assumption of me being angry because i couldn't join AOM is wrong as i didn't even bother joining there.Your assumption of me being a collector is also wrong. You don't know me and you don't know what trackers i'm on and you certainly don't know what interests me. So please for heaven's sake stop assuming.

Ahahahaa, I don't feel 'privileged' if Jacqueline becomes a member of FST but for some mysterious reason you do.:naughty:

By "encrypted" passwords i meant this:- If my password was "misdirection" then that probably would be encrypted to something like "1askfj2200dfkjasdf" and stored in their database.

Lastly,stay calm.

i think aom is just after the donations, they keep opening up signups on purpose to get more $$$ they already make 5000/month so i dont get it....

also the aom database is on p2p everyone can log in with any users password....

its a nice site still, but you can get magician torrents also on tbz or salad.tl

can you proof that we make 5000 per month? of course you cant. calculate with me. we have 800 members. that would be 6,25 per member per month. entering aom is totally free, we never beg for donations so why would members donate 6,25 if they could get it on tbz or a site from which i cant even take the name in my mouth. i can assure you that only a very very very small amount of members donate. all money goes back to the community for prizes and group buys. so unless you can show me prints of my paypal account i would recommand you talk about things you DO know about.

AOM is a nice place to be. Donations are used for the Groupbuys. Though I disagree that they use the donations for themselves but even if they do, what's the harm. They are providing u some service then why not earn a reward for that..
