View Full Version : Does anyone else here thinks that utorrent 1.7.7 is crap?

I'm running utorrent 1.7.7 on top of wine. Whenever I try to remove a torrent + data directly from the utorrent gui (not the WebUI), there's about 50% chance that utorrent will crash. Once it does, all hell breaks loose: sometimes data of torrents get screwed, sometimes the .torrent files get deleted from the Application Data directory and sometime other crap happens. A good friend of mine which is a very experienced torrenter was banned from two trackers for HnR after utorrent 1.7.7 decided spontaneously to delete all the data of his torrents, and decided to downgrade to 1.6.1.

I just spent about an hour manually re-uploading the .torrent files and fixing announce URLs to fix similar problems.
My conclusion is simple: utorrent 1.7.7 is crap, downgrade to 1.6.1 if you can.

There, just needed to rant a little. All better now. :)

You and your friend must have terrible luck. None of those things have ever happened to me or anyone else I talk to.

By any chance does either of you run utorrent 1.7.7 on top of wine?
On Ubuntu 7.0.4? With WebUI?

Try using it on Windows XP then.
You don't need to install it, run it on a Virtual Machine...

I am running it on top of wine, which is a virtual environment simulating windows.

I don't get the crashing problem with 1.7.7 in wine. Do you have gui.delete_to_trash = false? What version of wine is it? Maybe it's outdated. Only annoying thing is the black background in 1.7 (which isn't a problem with 1.8 beta).

i have stopped using it, moved to azureus. not returning to utorrent so soon.

My Wine version is wine-0.9.33, released on March 16, 2007, which doesn't seem to be too outdated.
The other option you've mentioned, gui.delete_to_trash, is very interesting actually, since there could be a problem with the way wine emulates (or doesn't emulate) the recycle bin. I'll try this one out. Thanks for the tip! :)

That version is quite old actually. I have 0.9.52 currently. IIRC, when I setup a Ubuntu Gutsy server (7.10), it pulled in some wine 0.9.5#. The trash for wine by default is in ~/.local/share/Trash, I'm not sure if it might be different in Ubuntu (most likely not). Check that folder, maybe all your deleted stuff is still in there.

Never had the problems you experienced and I use this client for a while now.
You know, if you have so many problems with uT maybe you should post them in their forums:

http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=29330

They try constantly to improve their application and they always are willing to help users who post in their forums.

The location of the trash is the same, however the missing files were not there.

I think I just might.

uTorrent 1.7.7 runs fine for me. No issues so far, and I've used it for pretty long time.

hmm no probs with 1.7.7, but 1.6.1 apparently can't be a proper tracker, i seems it's the cheater ultimate friend, so most trackers disabled it I guess

It's really is annoying me.

It seems to crash whenever i leave it running over night, If I'm picking up an RSS feed. so i wake up in the morning and found its crashed about ten minutes after I've gone to bed.

Mine wont keep ports that I enter, so port forwarding always gets fucked. Or it changes the port to "0" after a restart. Damn annoying.

There is not way for anyone to get the 1.6.1 that I know of.
Thank god I had it in a external hard drive.

It's working well for me. The only problem I have with it is cosmetic. The window on the left hand side were you can input all your tracker names, it scrolls very wildly. If I pull the scroll bar down, it hops back up.

The new beta has fixed this, but some of the tracker I'm on don't allow it(Pedro's being one that comes to mind).
