I ordered both the PS3 and the 360 version. Not cause I needed to but I first ordered the 360 version and then I thought about the noise level and the possibility of a "meltdown" so I ordered a copy for my PS3 too :P. They'll both get some exclusive content anyway.

I'm also looking forward to the Social Club and the multiplayer which I think it is going to be a nice addition.

I'm hoping for a bunch of mods when it comes to PC. Could be a lot of weird new stuff with the euphoria engine.

I feel sorry for your friend though that might not be able to use his own 360 because you'll hijack it every day :P

One of the reasons why I bought my PS3 last week... :)

Well, that, and the bluray player.

But, yeah, VERY excited about this game. I played all of them (including I & II and those crappy "stories" games). I always giggle like a little girl when I see a character from another GTA in a game... I enthusiastically try to explain it to my girlfriend, who, honestly, couldn't care less...

I think it is personal preference but I like the PS3 better. It's less noisy and I have less trouble with using the analog sticks for aiming. Since I'm a PC guy I like to run Linux on it and Open Transport Tycoon looks pretty cool on a 42" LCD :P

The selection of arcade games on 360 is kinda nice but the PS3 is definitively getting there. The xbox live marketplace should have been like the PS3 one with "real money" instead of those stupid points to buy everything (you always end up buying a couple of hundred points more than you need).

If I had to just buy one of them I would have bought the PS3 but since I got the money I just took them both. Always good to have something to do anyway and they are both fun to play with.

You also have to take into account that they both have some exclusives.

Just tell her that the whole game is a sweet love story with bunnies kissing and everything... Might take some explanation when you get the game though.

The extra on 360 is of course of more value but you never know what will happen anyway.

In terms of the time it takes to finish, how does it compare with others in the series?

That's a hard question to answer really. I finished the story mode in 24 hours, without skipping cut scenes, but I literally blitzed through and hardly took on any side missions. If I was to play it again (which I will be, right on launch day!) I'd say to wrap up the story will take at least 40 hours at a normal pace, plus another – say, 25? – to wrap up the remainder of the missions. In truth though, you could be paving the streets of Liberty City in a year's time and still not have discovered everything. Plus, if you're a 360 owner, there's the promise of downloadable content to come...[My advice is: just kick back, take your time and breathe every fresh sight and sound in, don't simply rush through just to finish it before your mates. I wish I'd had that option!

I wasn't really into the first three. Although I did play them and finish them, I just didn't see what everyone loved about them.

But after reading the developer interview in last months EGM, I'm getting kind of excited about it now. Hopefully it's going to be the best one yet.

What do you mean? M$ paid a hefty sum for exclusive downloadable content.

To my knowledge the PS3 version is barred from any DLC so the 360 version is superior.

EA set a deadline of Apr. 17 for Take-Two shareholders to decide on its bid. "If we can't close the deal in time to market their titles in the '08 holiday, the value diminishes for EA," says Owen Mahoney, EA's senior vice-president for corporate development.

GTA IV gets the Bad Cop treatment

While we have seen many overly positive previews so far, GTA IV certainly can't be perfect -- no game is. Luckily there are still some journalists out there who dare to have a slightly critical look at R*'s latest piece. Two of those are IGN's Patch Kolan and Cam Shea, who review the game's multiplayer component in Good Cop, Bad Cop (http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/865/865944p1.html) style.

Amongst the things they aren't too happy about are clumsy camera controls, an imbalanced lock-on system, frame-rate hiccups and most worryingly the graphics:
"The depth-of-field blur effect is far too heavily applied to the multiplayer game. Everything that is more than 50 feet down the street from you starts to pixelate and distort strangely, as if filtered through a haze of tiny droplets of vegetable oil."
That is indeed something many people are confused about. In most screenshots (http://www.gta4.net/screenshots/) we can see blurry, low-detail buildings (not just in the distance), as well as heavy distortion -- especially in areas of water, foliage and shadows -- resembling a quality known only from paintings. According to a recent Kotaku article (http://kotaku.com/373773/gta4-hands+on-the-world-is-yours), those distortion filters are intended to actually improve the game's visuals:
"I suspect there's a filter involved, something that gives the world a touch of artistry. [...] Jeronimo Barrera tells me that Rockstar loves its filters. It helps, he says, fool the eye, masks some of the imperfections that games, no matter how next-gen, will always have."
Whether this is for better or for worse and impacts the gameplay noticably, remains to be something players will have to decide for themselves when the game comes to stores later this month.- Source GTA4.net

Does anyone think thegtaplace's screen shot looks fucking horrible?

Looks like R* don't like the guys over there and just sent them some rubbish cause it is definitively not looking good. It is a couple of other pictures (earlier pics) too where it looks like van Gogh vent crazy with the brush.

The water painting effect is still pretty cool though.

There is spoliers in here kind of...(Review from OPM)Official PlayStation Magazine (UK) is the latest magazine to review Grand Theft Auto IV, after being granted special access to play the game for several days last month. The review contains the same screenshots that were in OXM's review (plus a couple of new ones) and the final score given by OPM is also the same - an impressive 10 out of 10.
Here are some of the main points from the review worth mentioning (spoilers ahead):

One of the reasons Niko goes to Liberty City is to track down the man who betrayed his old army unit.
Cars no longer catch fire at the slightest provocation.
There are several points at which you make life or death decisions between key cast members.
Comedy clubs feature real comedians.
"Michelle" is the first girl that Niko hooks up with.
Dimitiri Rascalov is Mikhail Faustin's right hand man.
"Other uses of the phone on missions include calling a target to make him come to the window and into Niko's sniper sight."
There is a museum called the Libertonian museum, which features dinosaur fossils and exploding vases. Environments such as these have been created specifically for shootouts, so there's plenty of cover.
The name of every radio station is revealed:

I think i need to buy console soon, comp isn`t just good enough anymore for playing :(
Many games does not get PC version, or it will come out a lot later then console versions:(

And I usually find the ports to be crappy.

Would be cool with GTA IV on PC with a bunch of mods. I think R* would make it good/better since they always think about quality one way or another.

It's Open

Of course, to call games as vastly ambitious as Vice City or San Andreas mere ‘expansion packs’ seems childish, but nevertheless, the downloadable content (DLC) coming for the Xbox 360 version of IV has repositioned those games in just this way. DLC so far has meant the odd new car, jumper of bit of horse armour, but GTA IV is set to completely redefine the idea with expansions that are to GTA IV what Vice City or San Andreas were GTA III. Yes, Rockstar is clearly hinting at new downloadable cities; and the chances of them being London, Vice City or SA again are slim to none. So that’s new as in brand new. GTA IV’s Liberty City is the beginning. Think about that and be excited.

Say so long to those delay rumors (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6188885.html). While word has yet to come on whether Take-Two will accede to Electronic Arts' $2 billion acquisition offer, one scenario that will not occur is analysts' speculated delay of Grand Theft Auto IV.
During Take-Two's shareholders' meeting today, the publisher said that GTAIV has gone gold. The game is "in production and in trucks en route to retailers," proclaimed Take-Two CEO Ben Feder. Rated M for Mature, GTAIV will be released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on April 29.
Though it won't be released for another 12 days, industry watchers have already projected a massive debut from the next installment in Rockstar North's prized franchise. Last October, Janco Partner's Mike Hickey projected global opening-week sales of more than 9.5 million (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6180636.html), with 5.8 million units (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6188612.html) turning up in US consumers' hands alone. Earlier this week, Variety reported (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6189326.html) that sources within Take-Two fully expect the game to sell some 6 million units in its opening week, generating revenue in excess of $400 million.http://www.gamespot.com/news/6189477.html?part=rss&tag=gs_all_games&subj=6189477

THERES MORE

Yesterday saw the opening of pre-registration for the Rockstar Social Club (http://socialclub.rockstargames.com/), and despite some technical issues (http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=327871), the launch was mostly a success; thousands of gamers quickly swooped in to secure their Social Club membership within less than an hour of the Social Club going live. Also occuring yesterday was Take Two's annual (albeit brief) shareholders meeting, in which an announcement from Take Two confirmed that Grand Theft Auto IV has "gone gold" with production in full swing.
Today also has its fair share of GTA IV perks. Lazlow Jones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lazlow) -- a lead writer, radio host, and long-time fan favourite who has been responsible for much of the dialogue and content found within most Grand Theft Auto titles -- appeared on the Opie and Anthony (http://www.opieandanthony.com/) show earlier today to discuss his role in the development of Grand Theft Auto IV. While he touches on much of what we already know, he also goes into more detail on subjects that haven't received as much blatant coverage (including the downloadable content for Xbox and Rockstar North's inevitable "one month vacation" after GTA IV's release).
Here's a summary of some of the info that Lazlow covered on the show:

There are over 100 radio commercials in the game.
Announcements on the subway system will randomly alert you of spontaneous police harassment, security checks and searches.
The faux-beer brand "Piswasser" takes a jab at Budweiser, including a radio commercial sung by Anthony himself.
GTA IV's in-game internet is ridiculously extensive, featuring spoofs of liberal and conservative news sources with coverage of your in-game antics, as well as spoofs popular blogs and websites (craigslist, for example). Irritating pop-up banner ads also make an appearance.
Niko can hook up with a wide range of girls via dating websites.
Injuries mean much more in GTA IV. When Niko gets shot in the leg, for example, he'll begin to bleed and limp.
Recording sessions for dialogue and in-game audio went on for ten hours a day, five days a week. The entire process took weeks to finish.
Rockstar employees have been working overtime and well into the weekends to complete the game.
Between the Xbox 360 version of the game and the PS3 version, Lazlow admits that he prefers the 360 version thanks to the downloadable content; new missions, new characters, new comedy, etc.

If you want to listen to the show, a couple of clips from the Lazlow interview have been posted on YouTube (Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJGrnP8l_nk), Part 2 (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=aZe3SO9rIH0)). The full episode is also available through Audible.com for $2.50 USD (http://www.audible.com/adbl/site/products/ProductDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&productID=RT_OPIE_080418). Thanks to Planet Grand Theft Auto (http://planetgrandtheftauto.gamespy.com/fullstory.php?id=150259) for the heads up (and subsequently "Vanilla Shake" for sending in a synopsis of the interview). You can, as always, discuss this latest news on our forum (http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=328189).
To add to this influx of good news, we've also added four new(-ish) screenshots to our gallery (http://www.gta4.net/screenshots/). Don't be surprised if these images seem familiar; you may have spotted low-res versions of these images in recent print publications.http://www.gta4.net/news/index.php

The movies that we watch, the games that we play... they just wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for the audio. The Grand Theft Auto series is no exception; the ambiance of the city is as important to Grand Theft Auto as the Imperial March is to Star Wars. GTA IV aims to maintain this healthy balance of audio and visual, and on that note, I'm happy to say that GamesRadar has just recently posted a multi-page Audio Q&A (http://www.gamesradar.com/f/grand-theft-auto-iv-audio-qa/a-20080418152838249060) for Grand Theft Auto IV.
The Q&A includes Matthew Smith, Craig Conner and Will Morton, all of whom are senior employees with the Rockstar North audio team. Some quotes that we found particularly interesting:

"Stand in the street and you’ll hear three different radio stations at any one time coming from passing vehicles, all sounding appropriately tinny or boomy, depending on the type of vehicle and whether its doors are open, its windows broken, etc."
"It was our aim that you could place the player in a random position on the map, shut your eyes and listen, and be able to tell where you are, and what time of day it is, and I think we’ve achieved that pretty well."
"For multiplayer, we balance [the sound of gunfire] so that guns only really sound dangerously beefy when they’re at a distance you can be hit from, so it’s intuitive what’s threatening and what’s someone else’s private war."
"It’s difficult to quantify how many speaking parts there are, but at our last count there were over 740 unique voices in the game. There are over 80,000 individual lines of dialogue, more than 7000 of which are Niko’s lines. If you were to listen to each line back to back, it would take over 29 hours. Also, these figures don’t take the radio, TV, and mo-capped cut-scene dialogue into consideration."
"We also decided to make the pedestrian dialogue more realistic in GTA4. As an example, peds in previous games would walk around and randomly chat to themselves if they weren’t doing much else. In real life, people (generally!) don’t go around talking to themselves, so we dropped this behavior from GTA4. However, we realized that the random chat of old GTA games was a good way for the player to pick-up on what sort of personality a ped has, so we created the cell-phone conversations in GTA4 as one realistic way of portraying personality."

The Q&A also includes a handful of new screenshots (which should be enough to satisfy those of you who don't like to read). As always, you can talk about this latest bit of GTA IV info on our forums (http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=328395).

German magazine Games Aktuell is the latest magazine to review Grand Theft Auto IV. Here is their verdict:

Graphics: 9/10
The gigantic size of the city makes you forget the few graphical imperfections of the game.
Sound: 10/10
Best GTA soundtrack ever, and probably the most compelling feature in the game.
Controls: 8/10
Far from perfect but a big step from the previous GTA games.
Multiplayer: 9/10
Great concept and innovative integration with the single-player mode.
Gameplay: 10/10
We can't score it 11/10...
Conclusion:
GTA4 is by far the best action game ever created.

(UPDATE) This review is based on earlier preview sessions at R*. It's not based on the final retail version of the game. It still contains the review screenshots however (the same ones featured in OXM/OPM)]

This is a summed up article (http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2008/04/dan-housers-ver.html) from http://www.gta4.net/

GTA 3 through San Andreas focused on removing restrictions; GTA IV focuses on implementing things that make sense for the location or for the character.
In GTA IV, Rockstar aims to recreate the feeling of jumping from GTA 2 to GTA 3. It's not just an improvement; it's something completely different. GTA 2 to GTA 3 was 3-D; GTA 3 to GTA IV is a phenomenal increase in detail.
Physics in GTA IV make the game feel more alive; greatly improved graphics make emotions easier to convey. It's all about making the game more natural.
The story reflects the gameplay. The more realistic the game looks and feels, the more realistic the story can be.
Rockstar's dream with their games is to always make everything a flowing, completely integrated experience.
The development process for GTA IV was professional yet unstructured. The team hasn't really changed since GTA 3, so the process is largely intuitive.
The original Liberty City (from GTA 3) was never meant to imitate New York City; it was just "vaguely East Coast-ish".
As with previous Grand Theft Auto titles, extensive research was done to capture the true essence of New York City.
When coming up with the concept of Niko, Rockstar wanted someone that was tough yet foreign; he's both battle-hardened and innocent at the same time.
It took approximately six months to come up with a rough design of what represents New York City. Actually building that representation of New York (Liberty City, in this case) took years to complete.
As the city is created, the story begins to develop with Dan bouncing ideas off of Sam and Leslie Benzies. The story begins to be developed, artists start to work on the characters, and the designers begin to break down the story into missions.
Developing the actual Grand Theft Auto experience is a daunting task; although the game isn't linear, Rockstar sets it up in such a way that any given situation is predetermined. From the article: "We know where you can move around the map. We know when you can unlock everything. So although the thing to you playing game is non-linear because at any point you might have 15 things you can do, we can track on a huge multi-tiered doc, where you can be. So we know at that point can’t see other things. We’re trying to tell a story, design a videogame and take you on a trip around the world all at the same time."
While San Andreas and Vice City took influence from films, GTA IV does not. With the Rockstar team being based in New York City (and much of the team having lived there their entire lives), it makes more sense to base the game off of their own first-hand knowledge and experience of the city.
The main reason that we haven't seen multiplayer Grand Theft Auto in the past is technical limitations; the hardware just couldn't handle the strain that a full GTA multiplayer experience would dish out.
For GTA IV, the multiplayer experience isn't meant to be revolutionary or completely innovative; it's simply meant to be the best multiplayer GTA experience possible.
Multiplayer recreates moments while singleplayer creates narrative; it's all a very cinematic experience.
The storytelling experience in GTA IV is far beyond anything we've seen in any Grand Theft Auto title to date.
When we look at Niko's situation in GTA IV, we see him as a serious individual with problems that he most overcome; the world that he's stuck in, and the issues of those around Niko, are considerably ridiculous by comparison. It's this tone that defines the game.

"I think the level of detail the cut-scene guys have achieved is intense. They have the characters interacting with the world, which is hard enough, but they also have added a lot of feedback onto the world. Ricky Gervais - of The Office fame in the UK - is in GTA IV, as part of Liberty City's stand-up comedy club, and somewhere else he's not saying...
Speaking to free magazine Shortlist, Gervais revealed that he performs three minute skits of never-before-heard material in Liberty City's comedy club, as well as gags from his recent Fame tour.
The Comedy Club is one of several extracurricular activities you can get up to in GTA IV, as well as bowling, darts and yes, drinking.
"It's a first - which always interests me," he said. "It was shot in New York, my favourite place in the world, and I got to wear a tight lycra suit as part of the digital process. No, hold on, that wasn't so good.
"Unfortunately they captured the whole horror, except I look slightly tougher. It is seriously a big deal, though. Games have outsold Hollywood for the past few years so it's nice to be a small part of that."
The Comedy Club isn't the only place you'll find Gervais in GTA IV, he teases, but he's not saying where else he crops up yet.
Let's hope Rockstar didn't stop with him. After all, San Andreas had Samuel L mother-f**king Jackson.SOURCE - http://www.gamesradar.com/xbox360/grand-theft-auto-iv/news/ricky-gervais-in-gta-i-look-slightly-tougher/a-20080417132541314017/g-2006051014323586065

Shameful. After MyFox Fox News Chicago ran a little piece (http://www.myfoxchicago.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=6353524&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=3.1.1) questioning why a violent game is being advertised on city buses, the head of the Chicago Transit Authority had the ads removed (http://gamepolitics.com/2008/04/21/gta-iv-ads-to-be-pulled-from-buses-as-transit-authority-caves-to-pressure/). There are so many things wrong with this, from ignorance on parade to the violation of free speech as a public authority arbitrarily decides what gets to be advertised and what doesn’t. Earlier they decided that M-rated games were equivalent to X-rated movies (http://gamepolitics.com/2006/12/13/banned-in-boston-transit-system-equates-m-rated-games-with-x-rated-movies-nixes-future-ads/). No doubt there are still ads for Cialis, the NRA, and the military still cruising around town.
In fact, this very issue came up in Boston with a marijuana legalization campaign and they sued the Transit Authority and won (http://www.changetheclimate.org/news/2004/12/2/mbta.php). Ridiculous, isn’t it? But this is how we do it. Two steps forward, one step censored.
Jack Thompson was not involved in this little fracas but I’m putting him in the tags anyway.

GTA IV: The City that Never Sleeps

An in-depth look at the phenomenal level of detail in Liberty City.

"I think [the original] Liberty City was a great world to play about in and it was a great experience for us to make, but it wasn't New York. While loosely based on New York it had elements of many other cities and was as much a generic American city with a Manhattan-esque skyline in the middle."
"I keep seeing game worlds of sprawling futuristic metropolis or whatever and the first thing that occurs to me is where the hell do people buy milk, where do they get a cup of coffee? It's too easy to get lost in the aesthetics of something and forget to think in those terms."
"We've had discussions for years about things that to other companies would seem ridiculously insignificant, and maybe they are, but I think when all these tiny details add up they create something unique."
"When you have that feeling, and you are standing on top of a skyscraper with the world sprawled out beneath you and you know you can climb down and visit every inch that you can see and that it will all feel as vibrant, varied and detailed as the area you are in, I think that's pretty special."Read the whole artical here

MORE NEWSSSSSS

Two new GTA IV reviews have surfaced today. Official Xbox Magazine (US) gave the game a score of 9.5 and came to the following conclusion:

+ Wonderful environment with gajillions of great things to do.
+ Multiplayer is a deep, terrific addition to the series.
- Would be even better with a little editing: it starts slowly, has a few too many "filler" missions.

Xbox World 360 (UK) awarded it a score of 98%, the highest they've ever given out. Their verdict:

+ Oscar-worty dialogue
+ unfeasibly rich gameworld
+ inspired mission design

Both articles are full of story and mission details (you have to finish at least 90 to conclude the storyline, and there are at least 10 moral choices leading to multiple endings), as well as achievement descriptions (like "Warm Coffee" for scoring a date), hilarious easter-eggs (YouTube parody "Elictrictit" has all videos flagged as inappropriate) and quotes (Gun shop guy: "Stay safe, stay Second Amendment."). So if you don't mind a few spoilers, be sure to give them a read.
As usual, we invite you to discuss the OXM review (http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=330204) and the Xbox World 360 review (http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=330408) at our forums.

GTA IV Special Edition packshot
Unfortunately, the two French articles reported on yesterday (http://www.gta4.net/news/4079/review-roundup--new-interview/) turned out to be pre-reviews; most European publications are only now beginning to receive the release version of GTA IV for their in-depth reviews. Those that do are apparently being carefully watched by R* (http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/04/22/gta-iv-microsoft-and-rockstar-tracking-gamertags-before-april-29/), according to an email published by videogaming247, even though the game hits stores in only less than a week. And how it will look like when it does, can be seen on some photos of the special edition (http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=330202) an Australian retail store employee took.
And for those who don't like reading or staring at still pictures, there will be an exclusive sneak peak on G4 (http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/684796/Catch_GTA_IV_On_G4_This_Sunday.html) this Sunday at 12PM ET, showing actual game play footage for the first timeOXM REVIEW

At around 11:50am Greenwich Mean Time, the PAL version of Grand Theft Auto IV for the Xbox 360 was ripped and leaked to various torrent sites by a ground called iCON. This would of course enable burning a copy for the home console. Meanwhile, the NTSC version is expected within the next 48 hours. YouTube clips have been popping up online of the game's opening and early missions — but as of posting, many of the clips have been taken down. The retail release is a mere six days away. This isn't the first GTA game leaked as San Andreas was as well. And it was leaked a week before, too.
We haven't verified whether the 6.32 GB file really is the full game, but there are plenty of listings on torrent sites now and we contacted Rockstar for comment.

Dunno how he knows the NTSC is coming in 48 hours but ok.

Yeah, I actually just read a comment on TL that an uploader made saying he'd "upload it tomorrow" if they got it in stock at the store where he works today.

A couple of my friends got mail today saying they couldn't guarantee everyone that they'll get the game on the release date.

No problems with the 360 version though (thank god I ordered both:P).

One mail said it was due to "production problems" but I dunno.

Maybe they underestimated the # of orders for the PS3 version or something.

Wow. Amazing. This is going to be the game of the year, unless something truly unique occurs. The only games I foresee who might compete alongside GTA on this title are Spore and StarCraft 2. Anyways, a perfect 10 in GameSpot (!!!). The first '10' in seven years!

Finished with the (main) story on the 360. Now it's just another round on my PS3. Stupid decisions about who to kill made me wonder what happens if........

It's nicer to play on a system that doesn't sound like a stock CPU fan from Intel too.
