Utorrent vs Rtorrent

I am using Kimsufi with linux. What is the choice better for my seedbox?

I use rtorrent, and I loves it. You don't need to install a gui or vnc or anything like that for it. Apparently utorrent on a linux box is quite resource hungry because it is run through wine.

If you are planning on creating your own torrents for some site from the server, i don't think you can do it from rtorrent though :( You could do it from home and then upload files or whatever. With utorrent you could create the torrent file itself from the server.

I vote for rtorrent! :)

I love rTorrent, takes much less resources too.
And I use the "btmakemetafile" command provided by the "bittorrent" package to create my torrents in the command line, which I find faster than in kTorrent or uTorrent ;)

Guess it just depends on what you plan on doing with the box. If you are just gonna be downloading and seeding to build buffers, then rtorrent ftw as it uses less resource and don't need to install vnc and wine, but if you are going to be uploading to other sites as well then utorrent will be easier to use. It also depends on your level of knowledge of linux, and on that part only you know the answer.

edit: try them both and see which one you prefer. I used rtorrent for a while, but ended up going back to utorrent w/ webui. speeds and performance were the same on both programs.

Disadvantages of rTorrent:
* CLI only and no easy to use graphical interface (unless you use ruTorrent)
* Might need to install VNC anyway if needing a graphical browser to add torrents.

Disadvantages of uTorrent on Wine:
* Must install x window, VNC, Wine.
* Uses quite a lot of memory running all those behind.
* VNC not as secure as putty (SSH)
* .torrent file associations never stick.
* A year ago had problems downloading torrents with files in different languages (not sure if still a problem).

So my vote is rTorrent with ruTorrent web interface. Can run on very low specs!

If you are going to run uTorrent though make sure you use fluxbox and not something bulky like gnome for your gui.

To run utorrent in Linux you have to use WINE, which is a windows emulator (not to mention some sort of X-server or GUI). Why not just run rtorrent?

Just use rtorrent and install rutorrent webUI, it's absolutely similar to uTorrent's one. Plus there're lots of plugins, such as RSS and more. Been using it for a few weeks and tbh I really like it.

It's much more practical to use uTorrent with your own PC and using rTorrent with a dedi. w/ GUI maybe.
