try using small players like Winamp (they load up quickly and easy to use)
dont use big players like windows media player, Real player etc

and Winamp is the best player not the new (winamp3) but the old one (winamp 2.91)

use the link to find any other players u like i would still recommend you to use winamp.

I like Winamp because of the huge amounts of "plug-ins" you can d/l for free. These range from Visulisations (funky graphics that move in time with the music) to effects (small add-ons that improve the sound of ya tunes). You can even get a plug-in that searches a web based DB for the lyrics of the track youre listening to and displats it in Winamp built in browser.
I'd only recommend winamp 2.91 (not version 3 as Makaveli-tha-don said its sux. Too resource hungary)
Theres hundreds of free players out there, so try em to find which suits you the best.

Lamsey, that player looks good, I might try it out when I finally get back to my computer.

Despite the bad rep, I've yet to find a player yet better than WMP 9. Winamp is the one always recommended, but it doesn't have the features I need/want, like a proper library where tracks can be selected by artist, album etc (maybe Winamp 3 does this, but is seems to hog resources as much as WMP but without a lot of the features).

I don't really care about WMP being a resource hog, my comp is not the best but more than enough to handle it. I just don't get what's so good about Winamp, apart from it loading quickly, and being able to get Terminator skins for it (woo hoo <_< ).

Til then, I'll stick with WMP.

edit: OK, I wrote this before reading namzuf9's answer which does list a few good things, but still nothing that WMP doesn't do.

The new winamp loads way too slow, and they added a bunch of unnecissary things that use up alot more system rescorces than the old winamp.

My preferred player is:

And I like the ZDL GOLD STACK Skin:

I'm glad they still support the old version (2.8 now updated to 2.91) Goes to show that some freeware devlopers still give a damn about what their users think.http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/9/biggthum.gif

The best feature of Winamp...I type J and it brings a combo box with all the names of the songs in the list and then as I start typing the name of the song, it just filters it. Pressing enter will play that song. Its very useful if you have thousands of MP3s loaded and you want to listen to a particular song.

Winamp 2.91 is definitely the best. Honorable mention goes to Quintessential Player.
