Sounds like the problem is your computer, not the program acting abnormally. Stop using torrents and other programs while you convert. Or buy more RAM, better processor, etc.

or maybe your need a new PSU, would a processor or ram cause a computer to shut down repeatedly?

If it's an intel rig, it may be overheating. Make sure you blow all dust/dirt from inside the case, around fans and esp between the fins of your cpu cooler. If you want to test it for over heating..google 'prime95'..it's free. Start it and look thru the drop down menus till you find 'torture test'...select the test that produced max heat and start it. If you don't get errors or shutdowns within 2 hrs, over heating isn't your prob. Good luck...

IDK I've never had problems with my computer turning off or even freezing, because I use a Mac :P ...but I figured with something RAM intensive like transcoding xvids to Mpeg2 might cause it to crash.

Try NeroVision which is one of the best conversion for avi, mpg, dat, wmv, etc. to Vob (DVD format). I have never used Substitle with NeroVision, so I don't know whether it's any good.

There are others I've tried but doesn't work as good (DVDsanta, VSO, WinAVI, etc.).
