That is the stuff bees give maturing larva when the Queen is dead or dying to transform them into Queen bees. This makes them 100x normal size. The one that develops fastest kills all the competitors, quite gruesome.

I read about this in a story by Roald Dahl, where human parents thought that royal jelly would help their son to grow up big and strong. He did, but he also turned into a bee.

To be honest, it may have been a collection of short stories, and he was the editor. Too long ago, at least 15 years.
