Could it have anything to do with the apparent poor performance this evening ?

I know i might sound like some paranoid geeky kid or something, but something like this happens, it always smells fishy!

It sounds like the whole grid has too much interdependency. As a consequence, a small overload causes sections to trip out. This in turn leaves power stations with nowhere to send their power, so they begin to shut down. This in turn causes overload on sections of the grid...

Early reports said there was a fire at a power station in NY, but this turned out to be black smoke caused by shutting down the boilers. But were they shutting down the boilers because they had nowhere to send the power, or did their boiler shutdown trigger the overload ?

All they have been reporting is that the blackout was caused by "technical problems". Whatever that means.

There is a power down all across the grid for Ny-New Jersey approx.

There is "No evidence of terrorism at this time".

Apparently it was a over load and the main computer shut down everything as a precautionary measure.

I live in Fl, so I have power. :P

All off Fox News.

Anything happens its always technical. The reality is revealed much later when the matter settles down!

Could be either way no proof yet.

Elsewhere,
Frank McCarton, deputy commissioner for the Office of Emergency Management, said the blackout may have originated in Canada. "We understand that, from Con Ed, that we had a power surge and a dip and a failure that originated in Ontario," McCarton said.

Everything is so much technology dependent now that electronically an overload can be caused! by sending too much power somewhere!

Results:

Major traffic blockage.

Ten nuclear power plants went off line because of the power outage, according to the North American Electric Reliability Council, an industry group responsible for the security and integrity of the nation's electric grid.

Traffic signals were rendered inoperable, and emergency officials urged motorists to stay off the roads.

The Federal Aviation Administration temporarily grounded planes at New York area airports and in Cleveland because the blackout affected security screening facilities. The FAA reported planes also were grounded at the Toronto airport. The airports were operating on backup power, officials said. [QUOTE]

I live in Niagara Falls and we have power we have our own generator so nobody can blame us! I think the blackout was caused by using too much power at once aka airconditions.

I think I've got it now.

As far as I can tell the resultant hypothesis is that the RIAA can only get you if you are running IE. This tends to indicate that microsoft is in league with RIAA (and presumably MPAA), presumably in connection to DRM.

Or have I got that backwards ?
Or inverted ? :teehee:

Worlds within the World?
The First, Second, Third World and the Forth World
A rough probably outdated model of the geopolitical world from the time of the cold war. There is no official definition of the terms of the first, second, and the third world. Following OWNO's explanation of the terms.

Four Worlds
After World War II the world split into two large geopolitical blocs of contrary views on government and the politically correct society: the bloc of democratic-industrial countries within the American influence sphere, - the "First World" - and the Eastern bloc of the communist-socialist states, the "Second World".
The remaining three-quarters of the world's population, states not aligned with either bloc were regarded as the "Third World."
The in the early 1970s coined term of the "Forth World" refers to widely unknown nations (cultural entities) of indigenous peoples, living within or across state boundaries.

First there was the three worlds model
The origin of the terminology is unclear. In 1952 Alfred Sauvy, a French demographer, wrote an article in the French magazine L'Observateur which ended by comparing the Third World with the Third Estate: "ce Tiers Monde ignoré, exploité, méprisé comme le Tiers État" (this ignored Third World, exploited, scorned like the Third Estate). Other sources claim that Charles de Gaulle coined the term Third World, maybe de Gaulle only has quoted Sauvy. However...

The term "First World" refers to so called developed, capitalist, industrial countries, roughly, a bloc of countries aligned with the United States with common political and economic interests: North America, Western Europe, Japan and Australia.
List of Countries of the "First World".

"Second World" refers to the (former) communist-socialist, industrial states, (formerly the Eastern bloc, the territory and sphere of influence of the Union of Soviet Socialists Republic) today: Russia, Eastern Europe (e.g., Poland) and some of the Turk States (e.g., Kazakhstan) as well as China.

List of Countries of the "Second World"

"Third World" are all the other countries, often used to describe the developing countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The term Third World includes as well capitalist (e.g., Venezuela) and communist (e.g., North Korea) countries as very rich (e.g., Saudi Arabia) and very poor (e.g., Mali) countries.

List of Countries of the "Third World"

The term "Forth World" first came into use in 1974 with the publication of Shuswap Chief George Manuel's: The fourth world : an Indian reality (amazon link to the book), the term refers to nations (cultural entities, ethnic groups) of indigenous peoples living within or across state boundaries (political units, states).

see Native North American Indians
North American Indian Nations

More links to nations of the "Forth World" you might find at the Nations Online Project respective country pages under "Natives".
