Well, whatever you do, do not click that balloon!

Best to start with the usual anti spyware progs i.e. Adaware, Spybot, etc.

What I usually do is open the task manager and note the processes that shouldn't belong there. Removing them permanently can sometimes be the painful part. Knowing the spyware that's hijacked your system should be the key since there are programs out there that removes specific spyware/adwares.

In all likelihood this is connected with your IE problem. You may need to turn off system restore before you run your removal tool.

Very, very good advice DefX.Never blindly click on anything that obviously shouldn't be there.

Although it is the certainly best course to turn off system restore(because lots of nasties like to hide in there),I would try running some cleanup programs first before you do that because that step might not be necessary .

It would be really helpful if we knew what kind of protection you are using.

And if you'd stop using IE you probably wouldn't be having these problems in the first place.

Download and run A-squared (here (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/)).
IMO, the best of the freeware scanners.

True but because it is so thorough it has a reputation for false positives.
Run this online scan http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/ (http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/)it's great for detecting and removing malware and trojans.

It's not a virus so download a couple of the better antispyware programs like Spysweeper(paid ),SuperAntiSpyware(free)http://www.superantispyware.com/ or Ad-Aware(free)http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php and run them.

Too late to help with this problem but I also suggest downloading Spyware Blasterhttp://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html.It's a program that blocks malicious sites and is so unobtrusive you won't even know it's there.

Can I make a suggestion? This program removed some very nasty spyware/trojan from my pc earlier today. When i scanned this trojan with another spyware app the pc just shutdown without warning so i am pretty happy with this so far but might reinstall xp and lock it down this time jsut in case..gl.
