Install a player like BSPlayer or vobsub to be able to see your movie with subtitle.

First rename the movie and the subtitle to same filename example..:
Matrix.avi
Matrix.srt
...and put them in the same folder.

If you use BSPlayer, then it will automatic display the subtitles,if you use vobsub, then you can get the subtitle to work on most players.

VobSub can also add subtitle support to Windows Media Player.

 Is it also possible to add the subtitles permanently to the videofile???
If so, how does one do that?

Then you have to reencode the movie and will lose picture quality so its better to not doing it
