Mom has one of those hardrive dvd players, one of the earlier versions. She saved our "entire life" films from VHS on to the hardrive.
She has tried to burn them onto dvd on countless occasions, but they are Not readable on dvd player, laptop etc, cannot even simply copy the file since pc regards it as unreadable.

Mom says it gets burned in a special dvd format....

a.Is there any way to burn the films in a way so it is readable?

b.I have an external harddrive and laptop, is there any way to extract the movies directly to them. I looked on the back, there is a s-video contact, no usb.

I apologize for being just a little bit extremely utterly vague presently. :pinch:
Will get exact details of machine later when she is awake.
In a few hours.

Thanks for any tips.
:)

If you think about it, it doesn't make much sense that the disks can't be read anywhere else.

With some models you have to "finalise" the disk before it can be read on other drives. Mine does that (it's an LG RH7500), and it's a mistake I made in the early days.

can you view the files as data?

I don't know how handy you are but you may be able to open it up and remove the actual HDD inside then plug it into your computer using IDE. I know this is a bit extreme but if all else fails...

Did the player die? Also check into the finalize thing as well. I had a Panasonic DVD recorder that needed to finalize before anything could read it.

Here's the manual:

The bit about finalising is on page 60.

You also have to record in "Video" mode rather than "VR" mode, whatever that means.

Have you tried something like DVD Decrypter or maybe Ripit4me to see if that can rip the dvd on to the harddrive and then see if you can view the dvd by using something like dameon tools to mount the image and powerdvd to play it back.

If the video your are trying to copy to dvd from the harddrive is copy once protected then maybe the type of media you are using to burn it to might be the problem. I found this info on page 63 of the manual.

Some video material is copy-once protected. This means
that it can be recorded to HDD, but it can’t then be freely
copied again. If you want to transfer copy-once protected
material from HDD to DVD, you’ll need to use a VR mode
DVD-RW disc compatible with CPRM Ver. 1.1 (see CPRM
on page 48 for more on this), and the following
restrictions apply:
• Only one instance of a copy-once protected title can
be added to the Copy List, and after it’s been copied,
the title is erased from the HDD.
After copying a copy-once protected title to DVD it is
automatically erased from the HDD. It is not therefore
possible to copy a locked title that is copy-once protected.
You can identify copy-once protected material during
playback by displaying disc information on-screen. If the
current title is copy-once protected, an exclamation mark
( ! ) is shown (see Play display 2 on page 35).

Just be careful when doing this since it seems the file is deleted off the hard drive once its done copying over to the disc and to be honest I don't think that your VHS captures would have this type of protection but you could check just in case.
