I decided to make my own tracker, and I am looking for constructive critisism and advice on how things should be run, what should be different, things that need to be added, etc.

I know it's hosted in the U.S., but I plan on moving it once I get a real job and can afford it.

You want constructive critisism?

No point in hosting a tracker without any money. If you plan on being a Sysop, be ready to dish out money (in the $100s) when needed. The reason I say that is by you saying "once I get a real job" means you don't have a stable/don't have a job right now.

Don't bother hosting it in the US, but I guess you figured that out.

Besides money and legality issues,

PLEASE (for the love of Christ) make another 0day/trance tracker. ScT and TT are good enough for those, thank you. No point in having a tracker thats just trying to be like all the rest. :/

Think of something unique, a tracker which doesn't exist and that pipes your interest might pipe others, what do you know, you got some people who want to join and help out. :)

I agree with gekko, you need to find a gap market. Something like a dedicated xbox tracker, ntorrents has done well being dedicated to wii/ds.

But you really don't seem to be in a position to create a good one right now.

Agree

Not at this point in time anyway.
maybe when a site goes down and there is a demand.

Examples - Oink and Brokenstones

If you're going to make a tracker, make a lossless or audiobook exclusive one. We don't have enough of those, or the ones that already exist are too hard to get into.

I could write an essay on this but will just make a few points
1. Need at least 3 months fees ready b4 opening
2. Make sure you find something that is not already flooded on sites
3. Get in experienced people
4. Make sure you have experience at a reasonable level of staffing on sites before starting

I would recomend setting the site up with a few good friends who are experienced and do as a joint venture

Then once all that done all you need is a lot of good luck

All the above also assumes you or some one is good with coding of sites as well

Ok my advice to much of a surprise is build a well-seeded good-speed XXX site.
Thats the only thing missing out there. Theres always Puretna and Empornium but their speeds usually suck so y not do what others dont

don't mind the posts asking you to not make another tracker. make a tracker if you want to. no harm done.

Exactly. I suggest you to create tracker with content which is similar to your hobby, for example music style, film genre, soft etc. Rather focus on smaller range of content.

A lot of trackers fail through a few main things
1. Lack of knowledge.
2. Lack of funds.
3. Find to much like hard work.

If you can get all them 3 right you got a chance but still it might flop

if you don't have the financial background to cover the costs for proper hosting etc, i'd suggest you put your idea on ice. you can't count on donations, especially in the first three to four month. if you say i'm able to pay for the tracker for at least half a year by myself, then come again.

of course you can brainstorm and collect ideas, there's nothing wrong with this.

keep in mind though that you (or possible co-owners) are the ones fully responsible for the seed capital.

edit: and please get rid of the countless spelling mistakes in your rules.

There is too many trackers already. Music, movies, games, apps, ebooks. And trackers focused on different genres in those I mentioned (horrortracker, punktracker, indietracker and so on). So if you are making a new tracker try to think what else is needed or what would drag members! If you can't think of anything it's better not to start one hehe..

I know there are a number of people who have posted looking for either a dedicated audio book tracker or a dedicated anime/manga tracker, though whatever you do, you should make sure it's content that you care about and enjoy.

A dedicated, high-quality anime tracker would be great.

Running a tracker is A LOT of work! Ask people who have done it in sites you are a member of. My advice, create a niche for your site such as lossless indie music.

I third the notion of a dedicated, high-quality, private Anime site.

Make that a fourth on the dedicated Anime site. So hard to find quality in this area (at least for me it is).

There's BoxTorrents, sure, but they're a bit big and public-ish for my tastes.

Agreed^^
I try to avoid the public sites as well. If I can't find it on the sites I have or the Usenet then I go without until it shows up on one that I have.

Nowadays the only sites that take off are the ones that look very visually appealing. If you don't have an experienced coder who's willing to put in alot of personal time then i wouldn't bother making your tracker. You would also need either really good judgement or previous staff experience. If you're looking to make a dedicated tracker, I believe either an iPod or an audio book tracker could make it right now, although you will most likely need to meet ALL my previously said criteria, including Polarbear's advice on saving the $$ beforehand. Relying on your new users to donate to cover server costs in the first few months (if ever) is a mistake.

While I agree with most of what T.S.O.L just posted the best tracker for iPod's is coming back online very soon, everything has been moved from where it was to where it is now. Nothing has been lost on the tracker. Expect to see an announcement on it very soon in the back open thread.

There's BoxTorrents, sure, but they're a bit big and public-ish for my tastes.

The size is not the concern for me, but rather that Boxtorrents rolls over at the slightest legal threat. They do not allow uploads of material from some of the largest publishers, including ADV, CPM, and Funimation. This means that there are huge holes in the content they offer.
