...if you don't, should you.

is your normal everyday pc really capable of running constantly 24/7 weekin weekout.

i can't remember ever turning off my laptop since about february this year.

before getting a laptop it was the same with my pc i never turned off, but over the years i have had a few harddrives pack in. maybe due to this.

if your system is going to consistently left on then should you pay extra for a system which can handle it. i know people custom build systems for gaming but what about BT

My pc runs 24/7 until there is a bad thunder storm coming my way. About the only thing that fail was the power supply and the processor cooling fan.

as bittorrent is the reason i leave my pc on 24/7 then it does have something to do with bittorrent. what i am trying to get at is whether other bt users leave on there system consantly and does it cause problems

I leave mine on for weeks at a time and when I turn it off only leave it that way for a few hours. I haven't had any problems with it and I've been doing this for 2 years now.

I run 7x24 Notebook except after Window Update Reboot from last year

Not for BitTorrent Only. I treat it as my personal File Server .When I go outside,I still can get things that I want.

I use a laptop. If I need to take it with me somewhere I do that, if not then it seeds close to 24/7

Meh, they can run 24/7. I have a dell desktop from 10+ years ago that runs 24/7 inside this hot ass cabinet of a desk, its still fine. No hardware failures on it the entire time.

People should *try* to be aware of keeping it cool, and keeping the fans clean etc.

Guess what, people who turn their shit off every night have hardware problems too. I say, if you have a reason for letting it run, then let it run!

Its just a piece of equipment.. use it, thats what its there for.

I leave my PC on even when I'm not using it just like I leave my car idling even when I sleep and the water running all the time.

I try to justify this by saying "Think of the children!" but really, it's just cause I can.

I've had my server 2003 fileserv running for about 4 years straight. Only time it ever goes off is for a quick dust off then it's back to work.

That's the key to long lasting equipment. Dust it.

I turn my laptop off when I'm not using it but my desktop is usually on 24/7 seeding torrents. When I'm not seeding torrents, I turn my computer off at night. I agree with what slimdogp said about using your computer for what you need. You shouldn't have to worry about the possibility of your computer breaking constantly.

I always turn my fire hazard off when i go to bed. That's the primary reason why I use a seedbox.

I haven't turned off my home pc for more than a few minutes at a time for probably over 10 years. I have upgraded a couple times during that, but I have never had a drive or cpu go bad.

My last Dell desktop lasted 5 years and all I had to replace was the DVD burner and the sound card. My current machine is an HP and it has been running for close to a year now.

I always use a good UPS that does line conditioning, like the APC SmartUPS. That alone will save you from 99% of hardware issues.

exactly. I've a server 2003 running torrents and all forms of P2P, and other services, and i only shut it down for my yearly clean-up (besides the OS updates, but those don't count). It has a lot of fans inside and it's quite refrigerated..
It's a AMD Duron 1300, with 1Gb ram and 8 HDD, in a total of 750gb (ye, lots of older smaller HDD inside). It has only the power cable and the RJ45 cable plugged :D

At university, it was on 24/7. Once I started having to pay my own electric bill, I got into the habit of turning it off when I'm asleep or at work.

From what I've read, the most likely thing to fail is the hard drive and their life spans decrease with each power cycle so keeping them on means they're less likely to die on you.
