If you download the official installer from microsoft's site, it will only install DX9 on a non vista machine. I haven't tried downloading and installing dx10 directly on xp yet so not sure about that.

DX10 and DX9 (and earlier) do not interface to the OS in the same way.

Vista has both sets of hooks, XP only has the hooks to match DX9 and earlier, so there is no way to get DX10 to work on XP.

There was an attempt to make DX10 work on XP it was called the Alkyl project but it went belly up when it failed to produce any real results. Some people think that now that MS has extended the life of XP it will make a dirextx10 for it but don't hold your breath. The extention is more for business and oem companies than for gamers.

Those people are either hopeless idiots or dreamers....probably both.
You'll see DX10 on XP right after you see it ported to Win98.

I.e., NEVER.

Unfortunately what microsoft did was change call names, so you can't run DX10 on xp. Theoretically the enviorment would accomidate it just fine but with the way the damn handles are setup it won't run unfortunately.
