i've heard people overclocking video cards and stuff. wat is that? wat does it do? does it work on a gforce fx 5200 128mb w/tv out? help a fellow hardware noobie out. ;)

overclocking is basically increasing the core and/or memory speeds on a video card to increase performance

you can do it with a software app or reg tweak normally

because you're stressing the card more, you may void the warranty on the card

overclocking can yield good performance increases when done in moderation, however, if you do it too much, you could permanently damage the video card

overclocking should work on any card

Download riva tuner, install it and you can tweak it with that.,

Riva tuner is great...

have a look here (http://www.vr-zone.com/reviews/MSI/FX5200/page8.htm)
it seems they had trouble overclocking a certain part of the fx5200

however, to overclock, you should download an app like RivaTuner

edit: beaten :P

so overclocking enhances the memory on the video card, but can damage the card? cuz i bought mine from a oem comp manufacturer, and i have a 3 year warrenty. if it breaks, they will replace it. but it can damage the card? and how do u do it, just follow onscreen instructions? is there a guide or something?

you can do damage to the card
if the manufacturers find out you've tried to verclock the card, they may not replace it under warranty

the actual overclocking process is fairly simple, there is more info at the link adamp2p provided here (http://www.guru3d.com/rivatuner/)

i bought the comp from www.ibuypower.com. they buy oem parts and sell prebuild pcs with the oem parts. i think that if i say that the video card got messed up, they might be too dumb to know that it's overclocked, unless there's a way to tell.

When you overclock the card it gets EXTREMILY HOT so if the card is burned is because of Overclocking or that you put the card in the oven!!

THats an easy way to know!

wat if i put one of those pci slot fans in between the video card and some other card?

this would be a part solution, however, you would only be cooling the surface of the card, not the pcb (printed circuit board). the pcb is basically the silicon (and other materials) which makes up the base of the card and the temperature of this rises when you overclock. it's hard to cool the pcb effectively

you should wait and get the card. then see how it performs in the games you want to use. if it's good enough for you, then don't overclock.

if the games are lagging or running badly, think about overclocking, but you should wait and see first

depends on your CPU speed and Ram !

the other guy said that cooling only cools the outside, and not the circuit board thing.

ok so how do you actually overclock your COMPUTER not video card?
just search on google for "overclocking cpu" or "overclocking ram"

it'd take too long to regurgitate a full detailed answer just now

yeah, if overdone, it can damage parts, but done in moderation, it should be fine

how far is overdone?>

approx 10% of your standard cpu clock speed is possible without too much hassle

so if you have a 1000MHz cpu, you should get 1100MHz

of course, it's dependent on which cpu and motherboard you have (as well as the rest of the setup), but 10% is a rough guideline

the cpu and ram are pretty good. you should leave them as standard.
the video card depends on how it plays for you. if you find the card is lagging in games, you may want to try overclocking, but you should try it out first

if you're wanting to play hl2 and doom 3 (as you say earlier in the post), you may want to overclock, but try the games out first before you try it. you may be surprised by the performance

if you don't know if you have to overclock it, it's because you don't have to and should not do it by yourself.
