So I just went through a hard drive that was pretty messed up.

I formatted it to NTFS then threw a bunch of files on it. Then I found it corrupted some of my files and found out it had tons of bad spots in it.

So I had to wrap it up, and send it back.

Now I have a new hard disk WD 500 Cavalier that I'm formatting to get ready. What error checking software would you recommend for me to use to see if it also has bad sectors?

I'm sure there is something standard out there, since Enterprise hard drive consumers must check the drive first before putting it into a Dev or Prod environment.

Try using Steven Gibson's spinrite software on that!

Hey that's interesting never heard of it , I see he's the owner of the Shields UP web site .www.grc.com

I'v been using HDD recovery software from the Ultimate Boot CD . Takes hours to check and recover bad sectors tho . I have a young friend ( no patience ) who has giving me a few bad hdd's to play with and seem to be able to get them to work .
