Though it always helps to watch from the beginning it not a necessity.

The similarity with CSI is that they are both procedural shows where no crime is simple and mysteries need to be solved.

They differ in that Law an Order is also partly devoted to the court proceedings after the felon is caught by police.
People tend to think SVU is the best of the bunch.

Good acting and interesting stories characterize the series.
If you like CSI you might like this.Personally I like a little less talk and a little more action in my police shows.

The Law & Order franchise has historically ( and after 20 some years, it actually has a history) downplayed the character's personal stories, focusing on the crimes and trials.
SVU and Criminal Intent tweak this formula and have brought the lead actors more to the forefront.

I find the CSI shows to be almost unwatchable.
Don't much care for the lead actors and any show where the main female characters dress like hookers automatically suspends credulity.

If you want to see the gold standard of police procedurals, grab any of the Prime Suspect series from England.
Follow those with Cracker and you'll see how badly served we are by American TV.

Sam Waterston starred in a show called Q.E.D. back in 1970.
Q.E.D. standing for both his character Quentin E. Deverill and the Latin phrase quod erat demonstrandum.
Maybe the best American series I've ever seen.It lasted 3 episodes.:(.
