Well, you've got two graphic processors on one card, instead of just one. Downside is you've got to have a strong power supply to use it.

Listen mate, if you need the best card for your money, then the 4850 fills the hot spot...

the 4870 is better of course but will cost you much more>>

I think you can find the 4850 around $200

Is it better than 9800 ??
And what dopes FTW mean ??

In alot of ways yes it is, not to sure on all the specs but almost everything I'v read says that the 8800 superclocked is the same as a 9800 and way cheaper. They have the next gen cards coming out soon that are supposed to rock though.

FTW=F@ck the world= better than everyone/thing else out there.

BFG GeForce GTX 280
Packing killer performance into a two-slot PCI-Express card, the GeForce GTX 280 finally delivers good DirectX 10 performance in a package gamers can actually buy. ATI may take the throne with its dual-R700 powered GPU, but until that’s available the 280 is the fastest single-GPU graphics card.

I hear this is a very nice card

Here is a good review with some tests done

But there is a huge difference in prices :

As we're writing this, you can purchase a BFGTech GeForce GTX 280 OCX for $439.99 USD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143145) after rebate. A standard GeForce GTX 280 can be had for $409.99 USD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143141) after MIR, and an ATI Radeon HD 4870 is available for $274.99 USD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103061) with free shipping.

Is this big difference worthy ??
I mean will we find a big difference in performance ?

And here is a review for graphics cards made by 3dmark vantage :

Test Results: We normally don't include CPU tests in our video card benchmarks, but it looks like we might have to start. With the NVIDIA PhysX driver installed the CPU score on our system the GeForce GTX 260 and GeForce 9800 GTX+ take the lead with ease.

This means that Radeon HD 4870 Video Card take the lead in almost everything with a good price $274.99 (http://legitreviews.pgpartner.com/rd.php?pg=p~~7&r=500&m=76832313&q=n&mt=~~297.99~274.99~~~0~~y~&k=abc7f17ed88035d05392bba2dfbe7b6a&dl=1&search_id=ae833fcd618dc1ac09e89a1ab0c01153&set=1219429990&source=mlink) while NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 has a price of $359.99 (http://legitreviews.pgpartner.com/rd.php/pg=~18/r=500/m=64891767/q=n/mt=3~9~649.99~322.99~463.08~0~0~~~/k=c05ac7ecf492a8fb7eef599e12a8d3df/dl=1/search_id=8398fd993786fbae877f30f586bf381c/set=1219431837/source=mlink) , and that let u use the extra money for something else.

i'm going to buy a new pc and i just made this thread to know the best graphics card but i think i'm so newbie in this and i need more time to figure what is good and what is bad and what is useless . so :
can i ask u a question pls ?
why someone need 2*GPU in the same PC ( GPU=slots as i understood ) and if that's mean dual memory like 2*512 why not to buy a card with 1 GB already .??? many questions need answers but let me start with this one .....

cuz its not just the memory that gets doubled, but also the process power (now you have 2 graphic processing units(GPUs) and twice the memory) note: in reality, you dont get 2x the performance gain, but like 50-80%

theres also other + to have 2 video cards like you can buy the second video card later when the prices fall. its also sometimes cheaper to go sli/cf
example: when the 8800gt came out, it was about half the price of the 8800gtx but a bit slower. Go SLI(buy 2) of the 8800gt and you get way better performance for the same price as the 8800gtx

i recommend go with a ati card right now like 4850 which is about $200
can also take a look at tomshardware.com video card roundups -August -http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphics-card,1987.html

hope u understood most of this

the differents between the these cards is minimal. They differ in ways like customer service, product warranties, price, design(like heatsink/fan), and sometimes a small overclock. Look for these differences
and as you imagine they diff in quality. Go to cheap and the card might now last long.

sorry, im not familiar with ati's gpu based cards so cant recommend a specific one

AMD is at the top now?

I haven't checked reviews yet but does the Radeon HD 4870 X2 have the top benchmarks in games as of now?

Mmmm cause the prices of the 8800GTX have gone down. I mean I saw someone selling his 8800GTX for $125 and I was very tempted to get it to go SLI but I would like to know how does the 8800GTX SLI compare to the AMD's Radeon HD 4870 X2 now. I bought my 8800GTX when it came out for $750 cause it just wiped anything else that was out.

I don't have the 4870x2 but with what CustomPC says, it is the best.
And the tests i've read do clearly show that ATI's card is much better then Nvidia's...

I have the 3650 series... It's quite good for £60

Oups I just took a look at the statistics, I might be wrong :S

LOL EDIT: No, I actually stay with Radeon HD 4870 x 2

I Just built my first comp about three weeks ago, Lian li PC-A77, AMD phenom 9750, Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe, HIS Radeon 4870, 4gb corsair dominator memory, WD caviar Blue HD, 24" ACER monitor 1920x1200, 1000 watt psu, Eclipse keyboard, and Kingston rollar mouse. So far im loving it, but it killed my wallet at 2gs. The 4870 is a killer card for the price $250. I can play Crysis at high on factory settings with little lag, and medium as smooth as can be, so with two of these cards I could only imagin how good it could get. They run really hot though, it idles at 78 c and can max at about 130 c. Hope this helps alittle.

depends what your after really, either the 9800 GX2, GTX280 or the 4870 X2, in terms of performance at present its the 4870... then again for the 3FPS is it worth the money? bang for buck.... thats the most important question

Well I would say that HD 4850 is an extremely good card and really gives you the best bang for the buck. Otherwise the HD 4870 is also very good and provides a very good performance increase in games today.
