View Full Version : Disadvantages of HD over DVD

I do not know how many of you have noticed, but most of the HD movies (780p, 1080p) cut off part of the original size of the movie (I mean on the sides). I personally find that to be a disadvantage. Anyhow, I still found HD torrents for certain movies like: The Usual Suspects, Lord of the rings, Star wars... that do not have this problem, keeping the image size as the original... release groups who released the good HD torrents are hV and REVEiLLE... did anyone else noticed this problem and knows other release groups for the good versions?

Advantage of HD over DVD is the same as CAM over DVDrip ;)

Do you watch LOST? It's the numbers they had to input on the computer.

The P2P HD groups are pretty awesome, Eureka and CtrlHD are definitely two of the best. The sheer quality on a large HD screen is more than worth the large download size :) I've noticed no cropping whatsoever with these groups.

Try some of the HD trackers. The full 1080p version is on bit-hdtv which you should be able to grab an invite to in the giveaway section :)

imo, cutted out movies come from hdtv mostly.. in bluray/hd-dvd usually screen size is okay..

I think he meant:

DVDrip over CAM ( has it reverse)
720p instead of 780p

you are not absolutely correct... the problem I mentioned does exist.

The best quality rip of a movie should come from the best available source.
If ripped well, the idea is to preserve as much of that quality as possible. For example, the Criterion release of a fillum will nearly always be mastered better than an alternative.
There is the problem of overcropping on a lot of HD releases. Here's an example:

If they come from a disc it could be the aspect ratio
of the movie itself not that they crop it

some movies are 16:9
some are 1.85:1
some are 2.39:1

Its not always the group that make them like that

A lot of HDTV looks worse than DVD because of the poor bitrates, but BD/HD-DVD and encodes from them is so much better.

kukushka

yeah, but the problem is that even on some blurays edges are cut off.. so picture becomes 16:9 instead of 2.35:1 or such

How bold of you. Exactly. The source is the single most important factor.

Pretty much, don't download scene HD releases, their standards are way too low.

The only disadvantage might be the bigger filesize.

they started to release full disks, not rips.. on scenehd there was already about 50 of them

huh, Ive never seen a 25GB+ scene release. I must have missed a lot.

I don't like to download HD movies because the files are just too damn big to sacrifice so much drive space just for better quality.

In my case that's not true, since I don't have, um... a "steady source of income". But it's not because I'm too lazy/stupid to have a job. It's because I can't have a job yet ;)

Perhaps I'll look into HD again when I can afford to buy a lot of hard drives. But, until then, I think that they're a waste of space :P

There is only 16 full rips on scenehd right now

Bit-hdtv has over 170 of them

ok let me rephrase it...lol

there cheap enuf to make it worth it if you enjoy the quality
some people dont care about the difference between the dvdrips and the hdrips and some do
just personal opinion

Actually
dvds are only 480p

720×480=480P
1280×720=720P
1920×1080=1080P

That's not true. It depends on the situation and HDTV can provide more than enough bitrate for decent PQ. I've seen internal encodes from HDTV that were better than scene encodes from BluRay/HDDVD for example.

Yeah I didn't think sceners released full disks, those ones on sceneHD are internal rips I believe. even though its "sceneHD"
