Make a triangle

34 x 5 x N

Calculate N

Done

Or a measuring tape, that would work as well.

Make a right-angled triangle at either end.

(80-70)/2 = 5.

Use Pythagoras Theorem.

34 squared = 5 squared + X squared

1156 -25 = X squared

X = square root of 1131

X = 33.63 cm

On the subject of maths, like, what is the next number in the below sequence and why?

32, 1312, 11131112

It's bugging the fuck out of me.

Nope.

I googled it and got the answer. Still don't understand it though.

I won't post the answer. I'll leave it for a while to see if some number freak gets it.

Nice one Barbs. I wouldn't have got that in 2 brazillion years.

Apparently it's a 'Conway Sequence'.

Where one number describes the previous number. Basically to get the next number in a sequence, look at the last number, then group all the digits in repeating groups.

For example:
Take the number: 1111333211233311222

Group it as follows:
(1111) (333) (2) (11) (2) (333) (11) (222)

Now count the number of times each digit appears in each group.
(1111) has 4 ones
(333) has 3 threes
(2) has 1 two
(11) has 2 ones
(2) has 1 two
(333) has 3 three
(11) has 2 ones
and
(222) has 3 two

or:
(4 ones) (3 threes) (1 two) (2 ones) (1 two) (3 three) (2 one) (3 twos)
which can be:
(4 1) (3 3) (1 2) (2 1) (1 2) (3 3) (2 1) (3 2)
Now write all the digits as one number:
4133122112332132

Hence, if the sequence started with 1111333211233311222, the next number is:
4133122112332132, Which would be followed by: 141123112221122312111312, and then 11142112132132212213111231131112 and so on

Ok, that's a complicated example, so lets apply this to the test sequences you asked about:
11 21 1211

Take the first number, and group common digits.
(11)

Now count the digits in each group:
(2 ones)

Now rewrite as a single number:
21.... check

repeat:
(2) (1)
(1 two) (1 one)
1211 check.

Now for the answer to the test:
(1) (2) (11)
(1 one) (1 two) (2 ones)

And the answer becomes:
111221

 Still no fucking clue. Fact.

It's just one of those things you pick up if you do a few "mensa" style tests and that.

See IQ tests are basically bullshit, you can "learn" how to do them if you practise enough

I tried some when I was drunk at a party. I got a terrible hangover the next day. Coincidence. I think not.

The beauty of it lies in it's simplicity.

In india there are these management exmas that utilise this .. they give u like some 70 questions to solve in 40 mins or so .. the faster you calculate , more time you get for solving the remaining questions

Does not everyone do maths that way?

Or is this the reason why I'm pretty good at head calculations? No one else except the Indians have figured it out?

Yep, it was a slippery bastard for a while but I finally got me head around it.

That site is part of the current Lost Alternate Reality Game. It gives us Lost freaks something to do during the hiatus.

Frustrating as fuck actually. They've been putting up one test a week for the past 6 weeks. Slow-arse motherfuckers.

there was a question " what is the answer to this question?" then the options were something like A.B B.D C.A D.C , how do you work that out? do you find a pattern of As Bs Cs Ds of like the answers you got from the previous 9 or what?

Nope, that's where the cheats come in.

You'll notice on the intro page to each test, they give you a convoluted spiel about the purpose of the particular test. There are clues in them on how to cheat.

If I remember correctly, when you're asked 'What is the answer to this question', if you click on one of the 'i's on the page, the answer will flash.

Or something.

You'll find most of the answers on this site...

Next year i'm sure it will be 3/5.

edit: Maybe even late this season.

They should have just made the second and future seasons a spinoff with the same characters, trying to take down 'the company'.
No need to have them in and out of prison over and over again.
