They are part of the body's remperature regulation system. The sweat cools you down, and I believe they're near some big blood vessels, so this makes for efficient cooling.

Also, they help to stop your arms from falling off.

F*** me why it is

Probably to prevent friction in the armpit area.

The armpits and the groin contain unique sweat glands which not only fuction to cool the body but to secrete aromatic compounds (phermones) which are meant to attract the opposite sex. The hair is present to absorb the sweat and function as a time release agent. Your sexy smell keeps going and going.

After a short while the phermones get rancid and that is why your pits' smell if you don't wash them diligently. Fresh sweat from clean armpits does not smell and if you jam a womens' face into it she will get really horny.

Or has socialization conquered this animal charm?

You can thank me for missing the point of your post and replying as if you were serious.

Remperture is only important in the rumpus room, ramsey.

Rabbits don't sweat, but instead dilate blood vessels in their ears and erect them to increase the surface area for air cooling. I believe elephants do the same.

Armpits are actually heat traps, but they do perform an important role in keeping the arm attached to the body.

I believe that they function as an integral part of the bodies system for homeostasis.

They are also very vulnerable to attack, given that the large nerve clusters and veins are relatively unprotected. So a good hard hit in the area will render the client unconscious in short order. I have seen it done.

That's the paradox, in order to perform their primary function, i.e. to assist in keeping the bodies temperature regulated, it is important that they are able to dissipate heat rapidly.

However this leaves them exposed to attack. The trade of is that they are unlikely to be attacked, because of their position, unless the attacker knows how vulnerable they are.

That however could all just be pi$h

If you hit them with something sharp they bleed like a sumbitch, and since armour during the dark ages usually didn't cover tha area it's been a time-honoured tradition ever since.
