View Full Version : WTF.. Graphics card gobbling up energy..?

Well, bought an ATI graphics card, connected it up and all is good and well apart from one thing - My CD burner won't work any more (all burning processes fail with a Track Following Error).

Could this mean that the graphics card is using up too much power and that the CD burner can't get enough to finish (or even start) any burning process? What can be done about this?

Thanks.

idk if wat u said is the reason but if its that

disconnect grafix card and try burning
if it works u mite just have to get a power supply that supports momre watts

Specs homeboy? What PSU do you have? Might even be a faulty cable too you know. If you do disconnect the GFX card does it burn correctly or what?

lol good point, but doesn't the mother board have like an integrated graphic card.

Hmm I did get the PC with a graphics card already installed (though got rid of it now that I have the new one), so no idea how I'd go about doing what you suggested.. Am positive though that the burner worked before the GFX card was installed..

I assume you're using Nero?

Here's what Nero has to say:

Track following error

This error message appears for one of the following reasons:

* The CD Writer has problems writing on the CD-R/RW. Please resort to another brand mark of CD-R/RW. Please ask the vendor of your CD burner for recommended brands of CD-R/RW. You will also find information in problematic CD-R/RW.
* The power supply of your computer is not providing enough power.
* You are using an external device. Please check the power supply and for test purposes install the burner in the computer.
* Numerous graphics cards require a lot of power. The same goes for numerous CPUs and some hard disks.
* The mains cable or the plug is defective. Please use another plug cable for test purposes.
* The computer vibrates to such an extent that the laser can not stay in the track. In particular if a CD-ROM drive is being used as the read drive.
* The device has become hot - only operate in cool conditions.
* If you have one of the following CD writers:

Grundig CDR100IPW, HP 4020, Kodak CDR240, Mitsubishi CDVR2X4, Mitsumi CD-R CR-2401TS, Philips CDD2000, Plasmon CDR4220, Plasmon RF4100, Plasmon RF4102, Wearnes CDR-432
or are using one of the following:
HP 6020, Mitsubishi CDVR2X6, Mitsubishi CDVR, Philips CDD2600, Wearnes CDR-632P

then it could be a case of the well-known grease problem. In particular if the error has only been occurring recently. Other CD Writer are also affected, in which it may help to grease the axles with silicon grease (Warning: We don't guarantee anything!) Further information on this is available.

If your CD burner is in the first group, go to http://village.flashnet.it/~fn023975/cdd2000.html (Information on how to fix
the Philips CDD2000 'Spring problem'). Users report that firmware 1.25 reduces the problem.

If your CD burner is in the second group: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bay/6893/fix.htm

* The lens of the write laser is dirty.
* The CD-R itself is not clean or is of bad quality. In particular if writing with 8x, conditions like this become noticeable.
* If 80 minute CD-Rs are being used, then the cause can be that the track distance is too small, on the limit of the specification. It is possible that you are using a CD Writer , which has problems writing on these.
* Older driver versions of the file CDR4VSD.VXD (driver from Easy CD) also cause the above mentioned error message
* The error message can also occur if the CD Writer has not been set up correctly. Please set the system settings as described in recommended settings .
* One case is known in which the error message appeared after exchanging the motherboard. After newly setting up the motherboard (including formatting), the problem was solved.
* Or there is a hardware problem.

It's a long list, but you may see something familiar there.

Seen that list.. Am guessing it's the power supply, but how can I be sure? And if it is, what is the easiest (and cheapest) way to solve it?

Disconnect something other than teh graphics card.
Basically just disconnect everything from the pc that isn't needed for it to boot.;)

i've had this issue be4, but it was not the psu. ended up being that my dvd-rw had shit on me.

other things that have happened in the past to fix this were uninstalling nero & the rom. have windows redetect the rom & update the firmware of the rom. then install nero again.

Well its probably the PSU. I would assume that you need a stronger one. May I ask which card you bought? Cause it looks like the PSU is the main problem.

^I posted all the details on page 1..

What happens when buying a new PSU, and how cheap can I get one that will do the job for me properly?

What wattage is your current PSU?

How do I figure that one out? Sorry, I'm a hardware novice when it comes to dealing with bits and bobs inside the PC.

it should say on the side of the PSU. XXXX Wattage. Also look at the amp values for 3.3v, 5v, and 12v.

You should check out PSU's from Corsair. They make really good stuff and offers a great "best bang for the buck". The 450 w should be good enough for you.

Is that two cards or one card and a typo?

If it is one card, Ati/AMD recommend a 550W PSU, if it is 2 cards they recommend 750W.

They (and I) also recommend certified PSUs. If you think about it, your whole system depends on the PSU, if it fails how much of your system will it take with it. Definitely not an area where you want to skip quality parts.

Totally agree the PSU is the Nervous system of the rig.

Corsair does make good ones. 620HX modular FTW

You don't need a 550w for a single card like that one. Although if they are two, then a 650 should be quite good enough.

Anyone remember using a psu calculator ? It seems so silly now .

It all depends on how good the PSU is and the amps rating on the 12v line mostly.

Seems my mobo is dead from an initial look at it by a technician.. He said he'd be in touch with me by tomorrow (left the machine with him yesterday).. At the worst, will buy a new PC, in which case I'll be back for some serious discussion abou what I should get and for what price. :)
