Your definition of "true talent" seems to be "can play very fast and cram more notes into a minute than anyone else".

One way to go, I guess.

Not at all, these are just examples albeit to you and others it may seem I just chose fast shredders, fast != good and I know that. These are examples to check out the artists themselves and I just took whatever came up on youtube when I typed in there name w/o looking. Prime example, follow the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ea8fJx4hio

And just b/c they play fast most of the time doesn't mean they don't put feeling behind it, Oziel Zinho is a prime example of that, he's fast and has a ton of emotion behind his playing w/ excellent phrasing and dynamics.

Only reason I was miffed is b/c everyone keeps posting "slash, hendrix, etc etc", yes they're good but for gods sake move on, there are way better players out there than those guys. Yes they were pioneers but its time to start recognizing better players and giving credit where its due.

My favourite guitar player of all time has to be Steve Gaines... career tragically cut short in the plane crash that killed other members of Lynyrd Skynyrd :(

He wasn't part of their original line up but joined through his sister Cassie, who was a backing singer and who also tragically died in the crash.

For any of his solo's just YouTube him, there are thousands of clips of him playing and when people talk of emotion in their playing, just watch him get engrossed in his music. Tbh, any one of Lynyrd Skynyrd's guitarists could easily have been in the greatest guitarists of all time, Gary Rossington or Allen Collins were equally as good. Even now people are still trying to play Freebird, everyone knows the guitar rifts of Sweet Home Alabama, and one of the best guitar solo's I've heard Steve Gaines ever play was in T for Texas.

Top class guitarist, but rarely if ever mentioned in these sorts of thread.

Rock players... Steve Vai, Richie Blackmore, Richie Ranno (Starz), almost every guitar player that was in Thin Lizzy (Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore), Ace Frehley (very underrated), Brian May, (no one mentioned Ted Nugent?) and of course the Jimis, Hendrix and Page for innovting most of it...

Blues & Jazz there are simply too many good players to pick out a 'best'

anonymous0711
04-01-2010, 11:53 AM
I love David Gilmour but i couldnt say best of all time... he did amazing things with the guitar b/c he made you feel the music but honestly it was kind of like a cleaner version of the hendrix(in that it had a lot of emotion behind it) and since he was neither the pioneer of that style nor the best at it its hard to call him the best... he also had the benefit of being surrounded by other very talented musicians

If i were to pick a best tho i'd have to put buckethead up there, dude is ridiculous even if he is a complete wackjob
maybe i missed it but im sad i havent even seen clapton mentioned in this thread as well as others such as Yngwie Malmsteen

and if we were gonna go with pioneers which is what sets Jimi Hendrix apart can Les Paul get a little love i mean cmon...

Hard arguement i must say i also love me a little Zach Wylde lol
