Not if the news come from the pinochio channel.
Maybe if we sell the white house and we fix an apartment in the DC, maybe americans can save some money right there.

I would say that Spain has a weird sense of priorities, terrible taste in art and little idea of what a ceiling renovation should cost.
I would also say that your thread title is totally misleading as it wasn't the UN that paid for this but Spain and only a fraction of the cost (absurd as it may be)- $633,000- was actually diverted from foreign aid money.
Wasteful, yes but let's castigate the right entity here.

Read it wherever you'd like; the substance won't differ.

This also isn't the place to discuss your opinion of the source, rather the story.

Which entity would that be?
The Spanish government/people (they really are totally interchangeable, you see, as they share a pocketbook)?
I also reviewed Skizo's links, and found they, like Foxnews, saw the U.N.'s funding the mural as questionable, no matter the amount.
Besides all that, what, precisely, is amiss with the title of this thread?
How does one separate out the U.N. in this story?
Or is the need to take exception with Foxnews (as with shit-head, above) the overriding compulsion?

The UN DIDN'T pay for the work...that's what the point is.
Spain donated it and paid for a significant portion through private donations.
A more accurate title would be "Hoi, all you fans of Spain".
BTW, I feel no compulsion to "take exception" with Fox News.
Any network that provides a platform for Sean Hannity is beneath my contemplation.
You miss my point.
I agitate against the U.N.
Leave Spain to the others.
You don't watch Foxnews, then.
Except for Youtube, I mean.

As long as my tax dollars aren't involved.
As long as my tax dollars aren't involved.
So, if your share of the non-specifically-Spanish monies comes to, say, .00000001% of the $600K-odd, are you involved, or not? :whistling

It seems pretty clear from the posted links that there is no "non-specifically Spanish monies".
Any proof to the contrary?
Funny stuff.
Now do the EU, or OPEC.

Oh yeah-
"around $633,000 came from Spain's budget for overseas development aid."
I was homing in on the "taxpayer/private" monies.
Where do you suppose the $633K came from, being Spanish money, but not Spanish "taxpayer/private" money.
Could you solve this mystery for me, sir.
The Overseas Development Aid Fund?

Which leads me to ask-"Why are YOU outraged about this?"
I don't get "outraged" anymore.
That said, the UN is a hobby of mine, as well you know.
Any entity so blindly hallowed, yet unrelentingly and unremittingly feckless and corrupt, gets my attention.

Have you been listening to excerpts of the senates farewell words (eulogies) to ex Sen. Ted Stevens then :whistling

I have, in fact.
Please, tell us all how I feel about Ted Stevens. :whistling

How did the bush administration escape this 'atention'?
On topic, that kind of excessive, pointless expenditure and drawing from aid funds is frankly disgusting. All these international organisations (EU, IMF, NATO, UN, WB, etc) need a crap load more scrutiny and transparency.

Here's a vote for disbanding NATO.
Do it now, George.

OK, we get it...you hate the UN.
Apparently, you now hate Spain as well.
If there's a point to be made, why not make it now.
I'm hating NATO at the moment, and he UN will come back 'round soon enough.
Spain not so much.

'Twas their money that perpetrated this outrage on your sensibilities.
Okay, okay - Spain, too.
Just for you. :whistling

This, is actually an interesting word that could refer to almost anything. If this, refers to the ceiling, then probably, the complete American delegation were on vacation in Bali, when it occurred, and with all the telphone lines down at the time, this could help explain why it came as a surprise.

Think more in terms of what you might (not) have heard, absent the spin, however that might have been perceived.
