this is what it says on the pipex site for my order status:

"BT have confirmed to us that your line should be enabled for ADSL during 10/09/2003. A precise installation time during the day cannot be guaranteed but work will normally be completed by the end of the business day."

should i be using the connection or not?
more to the point, should i be using the connection for downloading 'stuff'?

well I spose my 17 bucks a month for 5 gig is still good atm

rather then paying 100 bucks for 512 with 1 gig cap

They might charge you an extra 75p for using it a day early.

No, seriously, it is BT who turn it on, it is BT who are using a little bit extra electricity, and it is BT who are losing out on a day's traffic at wholesale rates, so I don't think Pipex are going to mind, and I doubt if BT will even know.

it works out at £23.44 per month for a 512k 'unmetered' service for me
the newsgroup support is supposed to be excellent for Pipex too, i found this (http://www.psi-rho.com/pipex/newslist.php) page, which tells you all the newsgroup posts for last 24 hours

Get the damn thing used - what do you think they are going to do if they even notice you are using it a day early, disconnect you ? I don't think so, they want your business.

I cannot imagine going back to dial up. Broadband cuts the waiting time, no phone line, always on and ready.

You will feel like you have a whole new toy. BTW....you know the difference between men and boys, 3Gen, don't you? The price of their toys. ;)

Enjoy!!!!

You can get unlimited 512/128k in Australia for about $80 - $90
this site has great list of them in Australia

i'm currently dling at 493kbps

:D

i know that my connection is 'only' 512k compared to some of the other members much faster connections, however, when you've been on 56k so long, it feels fantastic

p.s. should i tweak my mtu and settings, or should i leave them alone for now?

funny you should say that actually
i was just thinking about this very thing
with 56k, it's not exactly hard to max the connection, however, with up to 10x more bandwidth available, i'm gonna be hard pushed to max it (outwith servers anyway), so i'll need to complain sometime...:P

@Neverose, it's brilliant not having to wait up to 5 seconds to load a page. that'd be the main thing i'm noticing now
i'll need to go and dl something to make sure it's working correctly now...:P

I remember when i first got broadband, i lifted the modem out of its cradle with a little tear in my eye, at that moment i knew what it was like to have a son of my own, i gave it a little kiss, plugged it into my PC, got everything ready, braught a priest around to cristen little jonny modem, i turned my PC on and was overwhelmed with emotion as i, for the first time, downloaded a mp3 in 2 mins...
I get all teary thinking about it.... psshh and they make a fuss about birth.. blaaa  the day i got broadband was the best day of my life

Now which ISP did you choose? If you ended up getting Comcast then you have more to be excited about then just getting broadband - Comcast will be offering
3 mb/sec end of this year for their standard package. :)

Pipex
i'm in the uk, so i'm not sure of the support for comcast
there is a british isp called Bulldog adsl which offers 6Mb/sec for £99.99 per month though

i'm loving this already :D

just queued up a simpsons episode there, approx 230MB
apparently it's gonna take 1 hour 10 minutes...would have taken over half a day on 56k

That Bulldog sounds great, until you realise it is only available in Central London, and the 6mbps service is 6pm to 8am, otherwise is is the standard 512kbps. And upstream speed is only 400kbps at best. Then there is the £50 connection charge. And an extra £2 per month for static IP address.
And there is VAT at 17.5% to go on top of all that.

All of a sudden it doesn't sound quite so good.

it did sound too good to be true
i suppose the only way i'm gonna get a faster conection for nothing would be to use a laptop on the uni's wireless t3, however, that sounds a little dodgy...:P

Have you tried for an alternative path check so you can get off the rim, it takes about four weeks(telstra timing lol) and doesnt cost a cent, you just tell the isp your on a rim and that you require an alternative path check.
