if you don't plan on gaming, i highly recommend Windows Server 2003 R2, with a few extremely easy tweaks, it will look like XP, but blazing fast.

i can provide you with a link to make it a workstation (takes 10 mins), and trust me, it's the safest and fastest windows ever, without a single unnecessary process running.

I like any of the Black XP disks . Look at H33T for some good options . They may have Windows Server 2003 R2 as well , 32 OR 64 versions abound there like a candy store . :)

This is nonsense.

You ask about the "fastest" OS, then post a hacked version that's bloated with wallpapers/skins and dubious reg "tweaks".

You can make a very lightweight/fast OS yourself with nLite- strip out all the legacy drivers and slipstream just the ones you need, gut ALL the language/keyboard/theme support and only install the hotfixes that directly apply to your machine.

You'd end up with an install that's somewhere around 500MB (not including page file) and runs perfectly.

All of these special "editions" are nothing more than nLited versions of the stock MS OS.
You can do it- probably better- yourself...and it's free.

As for boot speed- the OS is only part of the equation.
Hardware can make a huge difference- especially harddrive access time- and drivers can also speed things up.
Which brings us back to nLite...

If you've ever paid attention to a Windows install, at right around 19% of "loading files" you'll see it take quite a bit of time transferring the Driver.cab.
This a giant file of legacy drivers that Microsoft includes so that most hardware on most PCs has a chance of running right out of the gate.
Unfortunately, 99.9% of these drivers are completely irrelevant to a modern PC. This is why you have to use your motherboard/vid card driver disks after install to get things running right.

During boot, Windows parses all of the driver options till it finds the correct one.
Stripping out all the legacy crap and slipstreaming the correct drivers means that the OS has but one choice which can speed things up a lot.

The same is true for lots of parts of the OS...MS includes support for literally hundreds of keyboard layouts and languages...just on the off chance you may suddenly decide to start typing in Turkish or something.
All of this gets loaded everytime you turn on the machine.

You have to be careful when you start stripping components out though.
Microsoft has woven a very complex web of dependencies and some things you want may require a component that you otherwise would deem useless.

For instance, in Vista I was removing support for "tablet PC" (whatever the fuck that is...) but for some reason that also deletes the stock "snipping tool" (screengrab app), which I really wanted. Took me a while to realize what was going on.
It usually takes me a couple of tries with a new OS to get the nLite setup right.
Fortunately, it's completely worth it.

On my current PC, a nLite install (which is unattended, BTW, as you've already fed it all the info it normally asks for- install key, username, etc.) takes approximately 12 minutes start to finish. This puts me on the desktop, internet capable, with most of the drivers already installed (some drivers- like Creative's- cannot be slipstreamed and must be installed normally).

Naturally, all programs must be installed after the OS but I keep all those executables on disk, so I don't have to hunt them down.
All told, a complete wipe and reload takes about an hour.

You should try it.

I haven't used any of the "lite" tools for a long time, but when i was using XP lite, I also had office and a load of other apps install unattended..cant remember how, but id be surprised if you couldnt also do this bit.

It's a version made with Nlite (you build your own OS)...

You often use multiple OS, one for games, and one for surfing...

There's much to see, A usual windows classic-theme, black wallpaper, takes about 10-20 seconds to start...

I was thinking of trying Tiny XP myself...Does anyone know if it has raid drivers installed so I can put it on my laptop? The last XP disc I made with nLite was fooked up and didn't work...Don't have the patience or blank CD-Rs to keep trying.

btw...Blackvipers guide works very well. Nice way to tune manually.

hey bums, where did you find TinyXP ?
i might give it a try on a install on a EEEPC 701.

I saw a 8 in one install disk today on a site I frequent , it had a 2 Tiny XP installs and a few disk utilities . I could link you to it if interested ?

Not really my cup of tea as there's usually something missing or programs disabled . :(

Found this one guys .

Thank you for trying TinyXP Christmas 2008 Edition...

There have been many versions of TinyXP in the past, but none quite like
this, because in the past, TinyXP either had a lot of items removed, or
it had IE7 and WMP11 added with a lot of items still left in the
installation.

The latest Onepiece post SP3 addon was used. This installation also
includes the recently released hotfix from 17th December (KB960714).

This time, windows is as stripped as possible but it does also include:

Internet Explorer 7
Windows Media Player 11
DirectX Updated (including d3dx9_40.dll)
Microsoft Update

This is a Christmas gift! A fully updated TinyXP for 2008.

________________________________________________________________________

To install Windows TinyXP from this CD, set your PC
up so it will boot from the CD-ROM in the PC's BIOS.

Once you have booted from the CD, option 1 is the only option you can
choose to install Windows XP. This option includes added driverpacks,
but if you are there when Windows is installing, after copying files
and rebooting for the first time, you will see a command window pop
up, you have a 15 second timer, if you press ESC in that time, the
pack currently shown on the screen will not extract, this way, you
have the option to extract those driverpacks by pressing a numbered
key within the 15 seconds - or not extracting the driverpacks, by
pressing ESC.

If you just leave the installation alone completely, all the driverpacks
will extract, by default.

You cannot install TinyXP as an "upgrade" from within Windows.

Only install TinyXP onto a freshly formatted partition or hard disk.
There is no upgrade option available in TinyXP, because the option
is removed. You do not need any product key in this release - the
installation of TinyXP is unattended, once you choose the drive or
partition on which to install TinyXP.

Installation is set to "US English".

________________________________________________________________________

When you boot from this CD you have six options:

1) Install TinyXP Christmas 2008 Edition
2) Acronis Backup + Restore
3) Windows XP - Live Environment
4) Hiren's BootCD v9.6
5) SpinRite v6.1 (Hard Disk Testing and Repair)
6) Windows Memory Diagnostics (RAM Memory Testing)

Help:

Option 1 - Installs Windows TinyXP Professional SP3 with
all hotfixes to December 2008 - includes optional drivers.

Option 2 - Backup Windows, or restore a backup to your current partition.

Option 3 - This boots straight into Windows XP so you can explore
your drives whilst Windows is not running. Inc. Partition Manager.

Option 4 - Tests your hard disk for errors and repairs it, if possible.

Option 5 - Checks your computers RAM memory for any errors.

Option 6 - Boots into Hiren's Boot CD, includes dozens of rescue tools.

________________________________________________________________________

The installation of TinyXP includes the following items,
which are all automatically installed along with Windows:

-All Hotfixes Up To December 2008 (inc. KB960714)

-DirectX DLL Libraries (24 to 40)

-Internet Explorer 7

-Windows Media Player 11

[OTHER INSTALLED PROGRAMS]

-AllSnap v1.33.2
(makes all windows snap together, like in Winamp)

-Everything v1.1.4.301
(Search Everything, extremely fast search tool)

-Flash Player v10.0.12.36
(for YouTube and other flash based sites)

-GetDiz v4.1.0.6
(default viewer for .NFO files)

-HashTab v2.1.1
(shows checksums on file properties)

-Prio v1.9.8.1536
(plug in, adds many features to Task Manager)

-Royale Theme set as default
(also includes Royale Noir)

-WinRAR v3.80
(most popular compression tool)

NOTE: All the Start Menu entries are removed for the above programs,
simply because you do not need anything on the Start Menu for any of
these programs, so the Start Menu is kept nice and tidy.

All these programs are very small and all of them can be uninstalled
in Add/Remove programs, but why would you ever remove any of these!

If you have never tried "AllSnap" or "Everything" before, you will be
pleasantly surprised.

________________________________________________________________________

Automatic Driver Installation...

TinyXP includes drivers to cover the following:

Chipset
CPU
LAN Ethernet
SATA & Mass Storage
Sound Cards
Wireless LAN

________________________________________________________________________

DOTNETFX folder (CD)

Microsoft .NET Framework (all)

The included file "DOTNET.exe" is a silent installer that will install:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SP2
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

This silent installer of all .NET Framework updated editions is from
the addon "DotNetFx_All_In_1_Addon_v2.2.7z" by jd976

To install, just double click the file once. Then a command window will
appear and stay on until the installation is complete.

This replaces the old "DOTNETFX" folder on the original XP CD, which
only contained the now outdated .NET 1.1 and was almost as big as this
all in one silent installer is that has all versions.

________________________________________________________________________

OEM folder (CD)

If you want to install the drivers on this CD independently of
installing Windows, this is now possible by running one BAT file.
In the OEM folder on the CD you will find a file called:

INSTALL DRIVERS.bat

Run this INSTALL DRIVERS.bat file and sit back whilst the process unpacks
the drivers, then tries to find any drivers you might need installing,
then installs the drivers, then removes the initial drivers that were
extracted, because they are not needed afterwards.

You can run this INSTALL DRIVERS.bat file anytime, on any x86 Windows XP.

Do not move the BAT file from the OEM folder. If the BAT file is not left
where it is inside the OEM folder, it will not work.

________________________________________________________________________

eXPerience folder (Desktop)

Most of these folders contain quick solutions to things that otherwise
would be buried away in the Windows GUI or require DOS style commands.
E.g. "control userpasswords2" will open the screen to change your
Windows XP login password, or "intl.cpl" runs the "Regional and
Language Options" from Control Panel.

FOLDERS:

Desktop Icon Layout - Allows you to save your icon setup on the Desktop.
Driver Install Tool - explains how to install drivers "post install".
Hibernation - Turns Hibernation on/off with one double click.
Keyboard Settings - Quick way to open "Regional and language Options"
Program Links - Download links to many great programs, all freeware.
Registry Backup - Easily backup your registry in one double click.
Services Configuration Files - Configure Windows to use less RAM.
ShrinkXP Scripts - Removal of components whilst Windows is running.
User Password - Easily change your password for Windows.

________________________________________________________________________

The breakdown of items that are removed is far too long to list here.

You can easily check the 2 files in the "INFO" folder on the CD to see
what exactly has been removed, or kept. There is a file for each thing,
whats kept and whats removed, here on the CD:

INFO\Whats Kept.txt
INFO\Whats Removed.txt

________________________________________________________________________

Statistics:

RAM Usage On First Installation............ 85 Mb
WINDOWS Folder............................. 630 Mb
Processes.................................. 15*

*Not including "Everything.exe" and "allsnap.exe"
which are uninstallable in Add/Remove programs.

i will give it a shot.
i am looking for the most minimalistic release out there, as i like to take care of activating the services i need manually later.
i just got used to this way of installing windows, as i use so often win 2k3 and it really is "my kinda OS", you just start whatever you really need, no unnecessary crap.
