maybe this is because they're facing legal trouble and going invite-only didn't stop it.

btw, does anyone know exactly when they do their half off holiday promo thing?

As for free credit, I don't think they give that out. At least I haven't read anything on it.

And I had no idea they do a half off holiday promo. I've been browsing there a lot lately, and from what I can see, they may be the number one indexing site. There's a lot of content there that can't be found at other indexers(for example nzbsrus or merlins).

Although everything found there can also be found on search engines, but I like indexers more because they're easier to read, they're categorized, and I can just browse. I'll keep checking the site for a holiday promo. And if they cut the price in half, then maybe I'll subscribe.

If memory serves, they do their special every year and during the last week of the year. Half off or some such.

Their long time patrons know to pay for the entire year during that time and obtain said years worth of service for $20 or so.

Mr. Death seems to be at their door; if not him, then the British equivalent, the lawyers (with their bill).

There being no 'right' to 'free speech' in the UK, I rather doubt that any argument along those lines will hold up past the first minute or so of arguments in court. I think the clock is ticking rather loudly down to zero at this point.

Well they were sued for an injunction as far as I heard, so they are pretty much fooked at this point. Never used them, but that sucks for many folks.

So could this be the last attempt to gather as much funds as possible before they head out of Dodge.

I'd say keep your eyeballs on Slyck, they will have the scoop.

They're biggest 'problem' vis-a-vis the other usenet indexers (although several of them have come and gone after fingers got wagged at them), is the 'humans' involved in the indexing.

Makes it much too easy to troll the bits to find what you may be looking for, and be massive about stepping on one's 'unlimited' account on whichever server.

It'll be interesting, but I think that it's doooooooommmmmmed.

It's no more doomed than any torrent site. If the country in which their servers are held in decides the service they are providing is illegal, Newzbin will likely just re-host the site in a different country.

If they plan ahead, they might be able to achieve that without any downtime.
