It's already happened.

On 12/21 the dev team released that they had successfully unlocked a 3G phone, and only needed to develop the dumbed down version of it in a simple app for everyday users - aka "yellowsn0w" - to be released on new years eve. They delivered yellowsn0w this morning and is enjoying positive reviews thus far. :)
