Just ordered some parts for a new pc, cant wait till they get here
Its funny how you can wait weeks to order something but after you
order it you cant wait anymore.

Heres whats coming

ZALMAN Z-MACHINE GT1000B (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811235016)
Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202)

BFG Tech BFGE98512GTXOCE GeForce 9800 GTX (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143137)

I have always wanted one of those case for some reason, just love the
look of them, And I dont do gaming so this card will do anything I need for sure.

Hoping to get windows 7 64bit so we will see, gonna use a 500gb hdd I have for now
Still might order a 150gb wd 10k rpm hdd though since I will have to wait a bit for
that version of windows anyways, might try out some modded versions of vista 64bit
until then.

Anyways will post pics when I get everything, hopefully I can get it
nice and clean.

Yeah, you were lucky.
I clicked the link and saw $600 and was nonplussed, to say the least.
I've only read about this case- and not very much at that- so it'll be interesting to get a real person's opinion.

Now you will be able to go back to being plussed I hope.

I almost bought the case a while ago.One the the boutique builders was using them then(I can't remember which one) and I liked the look but the price turned me off .
I think it's a good case but not exceptionally cool if I remember right.

Zalman has a very weird history when it comes to cases.
Their first efforts featured complete heatpipe cooling for the entire case but limited the buyer to a very small range of compatible hardware.

Now there's this unit which, although the hardware restrictions have been lifted, is priced at the extreme high end of the market.
Especially odd is the choice of the PSU.
You'd figure (or at least, I'd figure...) that someone who's willing to drop $600 on case is going to have a pretty high end system to put into it, in which case a 600w unit ain't gonna cut it.

It's almost as if they approach the case market as a hobby and don't really care if/how many they sell.

Was just looking into the psu that comes with the case and I have to say that its not that bad of a psu, great ratings on newegg and its a $150 psu so maybe its not as bad as I thought, $349 for the case and a $150 psu.

Anyways parts will be here tuesday so will proly have pics up that night, but I did end up ordering a 150gb 10k rpm hdd and that proly wont be here until maybe wednesday so wont be able to finish installing everything until then. Will just use that for the OS and keep the 500gb I was going to use for storage.

Well got all the parts in today and everything looks great, I did end up ordering a 10k rpm 150gb hdd the day after all the rest and its not here yet so installing anything will have to wait but I have everything pretty much installed and ready to go. Case is very nice the doors on the side of the case are easier to use than I thought they would be, the rear one opens all the way up so when layed down it will fold over and touch the table which is nice and the other side rear comes off to attach the mobo to and put back inside, which I didnt do because I wanted to hid some wires under the mobo. The cooler seams nice was kind of a pain to get ready to install, just a bunch of little parts to bolt to the cooler first, and it uses a backplate which is so much better than the push pins. It had a 4-hdd cage in the front but I removed it since it also hold 2 on the bottom of the case and thats all I need is 2, and now the front fans arent blocked and can push air through the case easily. Installing the hard drives is easy just screw on the little rubber thumb screws on the drive and it locks into the little tray on the bottom, optical drives just slide in and tighten the thumb screws that are hooked to the 5.25 bay. Power supply seams better than I thought it would I removed it to get a good look at it and its nice and heavy and it has a 120mm fan and a good size heat sink in the rear which the air from the fan blows through as exiting the unit. The video card just fit by about 1/2 inch with the front hdd bay installed but I would imagine they made it that way. Comes with the 120mm fan in the rear and 2 92mm fans in the front. Case is very solid all parts are thick and well connected, even the bay covers are really built. Havent turned anything on yet will get some picks later when its dark to see how the lights look inside.

Here are some pics so far

It's a CM V-8.

What's with the red on the PSU loom?
Split-loom that you added or did Zalman do that?

What do you mean, "Even the bay covers are really built"?

ryan20021982
01-07-2009, 02:47 PM
I added the loom it actually looks better than the pic shows and you can only a little of it with the door closed. What I said about the bay cover was just how good of quality everything was, I had to remove one cover and was surprised how thick it was.

Hey that is sturdy. I can't tell from the pic, is that plastic or aluminum?

ryan20021982
01-07-2009, 03:00 PM
Everything is aluminum on the case even down to the buttons on the front.

I have to say I am very happy with the case, the only thing as I stated before was the hdd cage blocking the 2 front fans. But thats gone now so not a problem.

clocker
01-07-2009, 03:01 PM
Gotta be aluminum...if it was plastic it would have molded mount points.
Looks nice, BTW.

Unlike the red loom...not a fan, sorry.

One more thing that I didnt like, it little thing but bothersome alos, the motherboard only has 2 usb headers, now you would think a $300 mobo would have a few more wouldnt ya. All I can connect is the cables for the front usb ports and thats it.

clocker
01-07-2009, 03:13 PM
The specs (and the pictures) show 4 USB headers- 2 ports with 2 connections apiece.
How many do you need?

ryan20021982
01-07-2009, 03:55 PM
The front usb connectors take up both headers

clocker
01-07-2009, 04:33 PM
And you've got eight more on the back, so what's the problem?

ryan20021982
01-07-2009, 05:14 PM
Even the cheap boards have 3 or 4 usb headers, you work for the company or something...jeez

Not a big deal as I already said its just most all cheaper boards have more than 2.

What if I wanted a 3.5 card reader or wanted to install the bracket for more ports that came with the mobo, or had a 5.25 device that required a usb header, there are many things that use them.

clocker
01-07-2009, 05:35 PM
You don't have two, you have FOUR.
Couldn't you just unplug one set from the front panel (which I'm guessing has 4 ports) and put the card reader- or whatever- in that?

Again- and I'm just curious- how many USB devices do you use at any one time?

And no, I don't work for that company.

ryan20021982
01-07-2009, 09:06 PM
I dont need em as I said twice its not a big deal you just think a $300 mobo would have more, my $60 board in my media center has 3 headers.

Detale
01-07-2009, 11:45 PM
I think what clocker is saying is that you can put 2 USB devices on what is seemingly one header a UBS header plug only uses 4 pins so each The Specs do say

Onboard USB Onboard USB 4 x USB 2.0

How many USB plugs are on the front of the case?

ryan20021982
01-07-2009, 11:58 PM
ya I know how may there are it only has 2 in the front but it has 2 dual plugs with wires going to both sides, must be so it can power external hdds better, have seen other cases like that.

clocker
01-08-2009, 05:03 AM
That sounds plausible.
I have four ports up front and fortunately, my only external device has a split cord- it uses two USB ports instead of one + a power brick.

ryan20021982
01-08-2009, 05:06 AM
Ya I dont need em I was just suprised

Well everything seems to be running nice. I had the windows 7 64bit on it for a bit but couldnt find audio drivers for my mobo and a few programs wouldnt install, so decided to just go vista ultimate 64bit for now until window 7 is officially released. Havent done much with it so far encoding a bluray using megui now which uses every bit of cpu you have no matter what cpu it is. Been running at 100% all 4 cores for a little over 5 hours now and staying right at 50-55C the whole time, Idle was right at 29-32C so the cooler works pretty good. Here is a pic with some info on the temps and stuff.

What are the CPU settings for that score on Pi? Also Im having some fucked up problems with the HDD rating in the Win7 experience thing I keep getting a score of 3, Its set up AHCI and I made sure to remove the pin so Im getting 3GB a sec. But still it only gets a 3 Im stumped.

EDIT: come to think of it I have the same HW as you basically what are your bios settings now??

clocker
01-17-2009, 03:47 PM
The CPU is running @ 4.2GHz (467 x 9).

I had the same thing happen with the HDD score.
Try this...
-Make sure "Volume write-back cache" is enabled in the Matrix Storage Manager.
-Go into Device Manager and double click on the individual drive(s) under Storage devices. Go to the "Policies" tab in the box that opens and check both options...enabling write back AND flushing of the cache.

Restart the machine and run the index again.
Should bring your score up to "normal"...although at this point, I don't think anyone is sure what "normal" is under this new scheme.

clocker
01-17-2009, 10:33 PM
Yes, you should.
After install, choose the "advanced" view...the basic just tells you that an array exists.
In the lefthand pane you'll see a list of the volumes and individual drives.
Highlight your OS volume- probably Volume 0- and right click to bring up the actions...choose to enable write back caching.

clocker
01-18-2009, 01:34 AM
Win7 will recognize and install to an array with no driver help from you.
Afterwords, you'll need the Matrix driver to be added...get the latest one from Intel.

Right click will expose more options once you've RAIDed the disks.
