What program to rip a small video clip ?

I have a couple of DVD that I have ripped to VOB files.

What is a good (free) program to make a couple of small clips in avi or mpg or wmv ?

(And yes I know avi is only a container !)

I would have used virtualdub/virtualdubmod for this :)
There are plenty of tutorials over the web to learn how do to that !
