Aimersoft MKV converter

It is very simple to use and it keeps the video and audio in sync with the video output as Xvid

When you convert MKV to AVI select Xvid for the output, with 2500 kbps for the video bitrate and 256 kbps mp3 for audio output

One thing that you would need to do is split the video output into no more then 1 hour 30 minutes for each output video clip, if a movie is over 1 hour 30 minutes then split it into two output video files

This is a good DVD player to play AVI

if you're looking to play mkv on an xbox or something... avi is not the way to go, you should use XenonMKV.. some people use gotsent but imo it sucks ass.

It basically splits the audio from the video, converts the audio from ac3 to aac leaving the video untouched and puts them together in the mp4 container to play on the 360 :D

Here are some examples of upscaling from standard resolution to high definition

Most of these are much older movies and the newer movies will look much better then these examples, but even with older movies upscaling will make a major difference

All MKV files are mot created equally, when someone says they can convert an MKV in 30 seconds, they're not converting, but just muxing the audio and video together. If inside the MKV is a Divx or Xvid video, and an AC3 or MP3 audio, then muxing to avi is fast with any files converter (I use Virtual Dub Mod).

If the audio is Ogg however then it needs to be demuxed, converted to mp3/ac3, and reintroduced while disabling the other audio(s)(again I use V Dub Mod).

If the video is H264 and audio is aac its more difficult, in that case I use AlltoAvi (free opensource) it takes two passes, closing the program and reopening between passes (once to h264 avi then to regular avi), but does a good job, if not a lengthy process. The close and open bug might be gone by now, I don't know if they released a new version or not.

To find out whats inside an MKV so you can make an informed decision on which way to go, download MKV toolnix and install it (freeware), then unzip the two GUI's (toolnix is commandline) into the MKV toolnix folder (MKVMergeGUI and MKVExtractGUI). the MergeGUI is actually for creating MKV files, but it gives you alot of information the extractor does not, like which track audio is in english. Once the merge and extract gui's are unzipped into the toolnix Directory (its ok to overwrite common files between them , they're identical in each) you can right click send to desktop on each for shortcuts to start them with. The ExtractGUI will allow you to remove what you want from the MKV file, but as separate files, not muxed together like a converter will do, but it comes in handy if you want the Ogg audio out to convert to mp3.
