i use ie 6 and opera 7. opera gets screwy a lot, and the pages load a lot slower than ie 6. i only use it cuz it's got that tabbed windows thing. any other suggestions of good or best browsers?

mozilla firebird is a good one.

it takes a couple of minutes to set up, you need to install extensions from the main site before it has the features of Opera; but its worth it once you do, cos its very stable

IMO if you're having problems with Opera & think IE is faster, there's something wrong with your computer. Opera IS faster than IE. I'd suggest at least one of these 3 registry cleaners to help out : jv16 PowerTools, Ace Utilities & WinDoctor. Good luck.

I must reccomend Flaskpeak Slimbrowser which can we downloaded at www.download.com, i use it, it can be skinned, come with like 10 skins, and has the nice multi-tab feature, i like it alot, load every page I go to, and has a built in pop up blocker

How good is Opera really? I didn't have a good first experience with it. Though that may be because of the ad-supported version. Is there really a difference between the ad-supported version and the retail version?

People with slower connections (56k) seem to have a better experience with Opera. For me pages load 2-5x faster with Opera than IE.

Ok I just downloaded Opera a while ago and cracked it. I'm using it right now and this thing is blazin' and I'm on a cable modem. Can tell which is faster though Opera or Mozilla Firebird.

Mozilla Firebird is the browser-only version of Mozilla. They're supposed to be breaking up the entire Mozilla suite and just going with the individual components (Firebird for the browser, Thunderbird for the mail & news client).

That being said, I'm using the full Mozilla suite until then.

hmm.. so its pretty much just mozilla. I used it and it wasnt as fast as i thought it would be. i still find the browsers that run on ie go the fastest, albeit ie itself is slow as hell. opera and myie2, are still the fastest in my book.

MyIE2 is excellent and I have had no problems once so ever with it. That text shit that one guy is talking about bullshit. It is very similar to IE and has skins and built ad and pop up blocker. Load of of neat and useful features.

which is more compatible with a wide range of sites and protocols, mozilla firebird or avant? I was guessing avant would be easier since its based on internet explorer and plus using a browser very similar to the one i have now(ie6) might be easier to integrate. Examples: My ie settings for java and active x are completely custom, i edit cookie privelages per site, my firewall has to be configured to work with it, often i export the history file in ie for later use, will need to set up firewall with it, ect....

You dont have to open a new whole new explorere window for every page you open opera once and then you have the pages with tabs at the top.

Mozilla (actually the Gecko engine) is probably the most standards-compliant web browser out there (with Opera a close 2nd). This doesn't mean that all sites will look good, because a lot of amateur web designers don't follow the standards set up by the World Wide Web Consortium (http://www.w3.org/).

Netscape 4.x (before they started basing it on the Gecko engine) was horrible with web standards, along with early version of IE. IE has gotten a lot better when it comes to using standards, but it (and by extension, Avant) fall short.

Basically, if you're a web designer and you stick with standards, you can be reasonable sure that your site will look the same in all modern browsers. We're not quite there yet, but the standards-compliancy is my primary reason for using Mozilla.

thanks for this...i think that its a well put point. people often compare browsers based on how many websites can be opened by that browser, and say "opera is crap cos i keep having to open IE to load some sites" - this is indeed an incorrect approach to the problem; it is the webmaster who should redesign the site to comply with standards in order to make his page viewable by the public, and not the browser designers to comply with the site.

I never used opera. But i have used ie, my ie2, mozilla and mozilla firebird. i think my ie2 is the quickest.
