i'm planning on getting a new 120 gig hard drive as i seem to be downloading rather a lot on broadband (14 gig in less than a week)
i'm gonna get either a 120 or 160 gig drive
i want to keep my current 80 gig drive to offer 200+ gig of storage space

this presents a problem concering ide cables

my current setup is thus:

primary ide master: 80 gig hdd
primary ide slave: none

secondary ide master: cd-rw drive
secondary ide slave: dvd-r

my question is this: which is the optimum configuration of ide cables if i wish to accomodate 2 hard drives, a cd-rw drive and a dvd-r drive?

i would think it would be this:

primary ide master: 80 gig hdd
primary ide slave: cd-rw

secondary ide master: 120/160 gig hdd
secondary ide slave: dvd-r

thanks in advance for any advice or opinions...

It depends on whether you are going to be burning cd's with data from your C drive. If not (or only occasionally) the setup you suggest is probably the best, as long as your cd-rw has buffer underrun protection.

If your cd-rw doesn't have buffer underrun protection you need to put it on a different controller from your hard drives, which would mean your new drive would have to connect to the current empty place (primary slave).

i shall be burning more from the second hard drive, so this was why i thought that the setup i showed was best
my cd-rw drive is a lite-on 52/24/52 and does have buffer under-run technology

it seems like the setup i showed in the first post is best then?

thanks for the advice

With this drive you shouldnt have any problems I have the same and never had a buffer under run.
