What's the best procedure?

1. Find the Jelly Bean keyfinder and use it to change your CD key to one that isn't blocked by M$.
2. Update as normal.

Made me wonder if windiz updates still works or if anyone still used it .

http://windizupdate.com/

Just answered my own question :

The End of an Era

There's so much work to do on the site -

* support for more operating systems,
* total redesign of the online scanning application,
* localization,
* ongoing maintenance to the database, etc

But we've been short-staffed for the last 6 months, and the workload has finally taken its toll.

It's not "Good Bye" - we haven't been shut down by MS; and we have no plans to sell the domain name, or turn it into one of those cybersquatter search pages.

But we have to move on. The site will still be operational, but no new updates will be added. We will still answer email.

What if you change the CD key to one that is a friends legit copy ?
Will MS know that two PC's are getting the updates ?

No, I have a legit serial from a libary

Next best thing to do is this: Google this: belarc advisor current profile key

You will find all kind of windows xp keys people post with their profile, because they forget to remove it  Tons and tons of keys :)

Also, you can use one serial number, to a lot of PCs (hundred of them).
and when it will ask you for activation, then you will choose the Phone option.
And tell the man on the phone, that you have just changed your motherboard.
It will be activated successfully.

I had the same problem and I did exactly what Chewie (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/members/chewie-81700) said and it worked out.

Are you looking for the windows updates?

If you are then Autopatcher XP will update it without having automatic updates for windows turned on

Autopatcher XP is a app that has all of the windows updates, when you run it, make sure to not select the windows validation check type option, there will be many updates to choose from, also don't select internet explorer 7 because it is designed more for vista then xp and will run much slower then internet explorer 6, and don't install windows runtime update and don't install windows media player 11, instead get wmp 10

Yes they'll know that you're using another persons key as each key is tied to certain hardware specifications (well most, not all of them like the VLKs)... if he were to change too many hardware parts on his computer, his xp would actually deactivate and he would have to contact microsoft for a new one....

the best way to activate xp is using.. http://www.filesavr.com/windowsxpactivationcrack_1

sometimes it doesnt work unless you do this first... after you do the following run antiwpa3.cmd AND wga fixer.exe

#

Click on Start and then Run.
#

In the text box in the Run window, type regedit and click OK. This will open the Registry Editor program.
#

Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder under My Computer and click on the (+) sign next the folder name to expand the folder.
#

Continue to expand folders until you reach the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents registry key.
#

Click on the WPAEvents folder.
#

In the results that appear in the window on the right, locate OOBETimer.
#

Right-click on the OOBETimer entry and choose Modify from the resulting menu.
#

Change at least one digit in the Value data text box and click OK. This will deactivate Windows XP.
#

Click on Start and then Run.
#

In the text box in the Run window, type the following command and click OK.

%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

Automatic updates will work even on a pirated copy.

Sorry to bump this thread but I'm in a similar situation. I installed XP with a key I took from my school's library but recently it stopped working at the Windows Update site.

Automatic updates still work but I was wondering, are the updates gotten via automatic updates the same as the ones from the windows update site?

Afaik they are the same CRITICAL updates. But not the recommended or extra/addon updates. Which is fine & will protect that computer. Well as far as Windows will. LOL.
