An Experiment In Terror

Well... where to begin... about a week ago, Jonno and I decided to do an experiment of sorts.

As you all know, Jonno plays guitar (very well I might add).

As some of you may know, I sing (not very well, but I always sing anyway as I'm always listening to music).

The result, after days of testing, is that Jonno and I have managed to record a song together. The amazing part of this, is that Jonno lives in England, I live in Canada. Through the power of internet...

This is 4 separate tracks - I recorded the lyrics (while listening to the original song on headphones), Jonno played both guitar parts separately, then recorded the guitar solo, then combined all four tracks. Because of the fact that Jonno is on dial up, he's had to create this at a fairly low bitrate so that we could pass the files back and forth, so the quality isn't amazing, and because this was our first shot at this, we're a little out of sync at times, but the overall effect is pretty cool.

That is entirely up to Jonno, as he did all the work. I just sang it. :) He'll be around shortly I'm sure.

Let me just say that the poor quality is largely due to my lack of decent equipment (no sabbeth, not my Epiphone <_< .........It&#39;s my Tanglewood acoustic :P )
I am having trouble with noise when recording, the reason Nikki&#39;s beautiful voice is low volume is because I had to lower it to bring it in line with my volume.

If/When we do another (Nikki&#39;s choice......Sweet Child ;) ) I hope to have resolved my tech probs and make it clearer, but cos of noise, once I had cleaned it as much as I could the file was 39megs :o :blink: So it had to be crunch for me to send it :(

Anyway, I would like to say that it was a great pleasure and a big honor to play alongside our very own NikkiD :)

Good music and vocals, too bad Jonno doesn&#39;t have broadband.

May I add, you need a microphone with a screen, or filter (afro) to soften the sound. Prevents exhale "static". But it is still good, don&#39;t take it as a bad criticism.

Try Cool Edit software. You can get all of the expensive FX you need to touchup your music, like reverb, echo, flange, etc... . It also hase multiple tracks for multiple audio.

Sounds good, except of course the low bitrate but that&#39;s understandable :)
btw, jonno, what method did you use for recording the guitar, could be the source of the nasty fuzz and low end distortion. Lemme know, I may be able to help.

I think there should be more projects like this made, i&#39;d be happy to take part in any and add guitar/drums. :D

Ok guys, thanx for your imput.

Just like to clear a few things up to those who asked.

Nikki&#39;s voice is low?..........Sorry my fault, as someone mentioned it&#39;s clearer thru headphones as that&#39;s what I was using to edit it together, did&#39;nt think about frequency difference :rolleyes:

The low buzz actually comes from my pc, I need a new sound card which will be on the way soon.

I used a Tanglewood Electro Acoustic guitar with a mic near the soundhole as line in jack is not working for some reason.

As for drums etc, depending on what we do next I have loads of very high quality Recorded Live backing tracks minus vocals and lead guitar so I will use them if nothing else

But yes, the mic is cheap I bought it for talking, not playing music, and all the other vids that certain people have were done on my laptop which had a really good sound card but the bloodt thing has packed up :angry:

Rat faced@ it&#39;s bar mitzvah if i&#39;m not mistaken

Spindulik mentioned a physical filter for the mic that&#39;s a good idea I&#39;ll mention a software filter for the hiss/noise in the background. Although it kicks serious arse, I don&#39;t currently have ffdshow installed because I&#39;m in-between builds. I&#39;m waiting for the next build. It has post processing capabilities but it was designed for video and I don&#39;t know the settings by heart there may be a way or maybe not. BTW I don&#39;t know what filters cool edit pro has if any, never seen that program. I&#39;ll check with the doom9 forum there&#39;s bound to be a suitable audio filter to take out the background noise.

@Media......Cool Edit is a very complex programme and has a lot of filters, what we ended up with was the absolute maximum filter and ajustment I could get before the volume was so low you could&#39;nt hear it at all, like I said, the hiss and spouts of distirtion are my fault and I can resolve it soon :)
