sorry for starting another of these "which is best" topics, but i'd appreciate some help
i'm looking for a new hard drive, i've decided i want 120 gb and am looking for 7200rpm and 8MB cache.

this (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=32012) is the drive i'm looking at currently

can anyone suggest either a better drive, or a cheaper online shop for this drive, please?

p.s. u.k. retailers only and not any shop which requires a credit card (i only have a switch card)

thanks in advance

Western Digital is alright but its not wroth 85 pounds. (one advise never buy Maxtor hard drive even though it is cheap still they are not stable enough).

IBM (Hitachi) hard drive (http://www.4allmemory.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=upgrades.details&product_id=516)
i would tell u to buy the above hard drive, its the best one, blieve me i had it for so long and i never had any problems and its very fast as well!!

EDIT: its not a uk store but dont worry they wont jack u up and u will get it cheaper as well and if u still wana go for a uk store then look for this hard drive!!!

My Maxtor HDD is very very stable!

i found that drive here (http://www.gladiatorcomputers.com/acatalog/IBM_Deskstar_Seagate_Maxtor_Hard_Drives.html#AHDDIBM7K250160GB2) in the u.k, however, it's pretty much the same price as the wd one i was gonna get

i'm not sure about this one though, as i can't see any feedback on it

i'll have a look for some benchmarks, but thanks for mentioning it

For me I'd get either a Seagate, WD or maybe Maxtor in that order. But the thing thats been overlooked here are the warranties. 90% of HDD today have a 1yr p&l but some still have a 3yr p&l. I'd get a 3yr.

the first drive i linked to has a 3 year limited warranty, whatever that means
somehow that doesn't sound too good...:(

Look, the 3 year warranty is mostly standard, although I know on the last one I got, I think it was five.

Your choice is fine by means of company, Western Digital, is a very popular, and highly trusted catagory, and the 8MB one is a must.

Now, as for price, I dont feel like converting pounds to dollars right now, but I know I can get a 120GB drive, for about 92-98 bucks here in the US. www.newegg.com

And yeah, I think that price is for an OEM drive, but umm, thats mostly what drives are these days anyway, and all u just need is an IDE cable, and you usually have two of those in your comp already anyway, so OEM is fine for Drive's.

yeah, i already have the necessary cables and screws for a new drive

also, i believe the current exchange rate is approx $1.65 per £1, so $95 would be approx £60

you've got to remember that america generally has MUCH lower prices than europe though

especially on petrol (it's about £0.80 per litre in scotland :()

i wasn't 'complaining' about the 3 year warranty, i was 'complaining' about the term limited being used

No way. At least not in the USA. The standard now is 1yr. The exception is 3yrs or more.

Maxtrox HD's are really reliable. I beat the hell out of my harddrive with power shutdowns while it was still running, and that would explain why my motherboard is sucking, But where anothers have failed, Maxtrox has surpassed with flying colors.

Also Seagate has really good harddrives as well. Better then western digital.
seatgate builds them tuff. So you have a good choice between seagate and maxtrox. Max harddrives are not cheap either, but well worth the money. I saw a 120 gig yesterday for 180 bucks.

noob, buddy, wait until a rebate sale is available. Search the internet tommorrow for a rebate on that exact drive. You should not pay full price because (I don't know about UK, but in the US, every Sunday there is a rebate sale where that drive (or one even bigger) has an $80 rebate on it...with the money you save you can get a fasttrack RAID controller, which is badass in my experince..

http://www.salescircular.com/tx/computer/hdiskp.shtml

woops, I did not see the credit card thing...don't they have rebates in the UK?

no, we don't get rebates here in the uk... :'(
thanks for the advice though

everything costs more here too...

i've still not ordered the drive yet, i've been busy with uni and i've been trying to sort out the inside of my case, leaving enough room between my two hard drives, just to avoid any heat problems...i'm looking at getting some rails for 3.5" -> 5.25" conversion, or just moving the two hard drives a few inches apart...

Yeah, I noticed it right away. I was using fhost to host my sig and avatar. Fhost is now down. :( (Looks like fhost is down for good but I can't be sure of that.)

Anyway I got them hosted at: http://galleries.vinyamar.com/ps/images/yimages.gif

It's the old PicStore that has changed names and new look.

In the last 2 years, 5 maxtor failures, 1 WD failure, All had 3 year immediate replacement warranty with an additional 2 years from the retailer, total 5 year over the counter, no questions asked. If they don't have mine in stock, I get the next best in store drive as a replacement. Example, if I blow a 40 and all they have in store is an 80, I get the 80 as a direct replacement.

3rd_Gen, don't bother backing up stuff onto CD,hook up your new drive, partition it, install windows, put your old drive into you pc either as slave or on the other IDE cable, then you can copy all the stuff to the new drive just using copy n paste. You might actually want a CD-r backup though, maybe i picked you up wrong.

also, just wondering, if you're hard drive fails, and you have *cough* some dubious files on there (mp3's etc), or even nothing illegal, but personal, like credit card details etc, wouldn't it be possible for the manufacturer to recover those files while they are checking if the drive is genuinely buggered? or is it cheaper for them just to take your word for it and chuck the drive out and give you a new one. i'd have thought it would be an invasion of privacy if they got you're drive running again and were able to see all your files.

Depends where you buy but I've never had a problem with returned drives. Some places will just pull the sticker off and grind the drive, others just do a quick diagnostic before mashing them. They aren't concerned with what you have, they have all the software they could ever need already anyway. And no time to go through 40+ gig looking for something interesting.

and the fact thats its probably illegal for them to check the contents of the drive without permission etc.

i don't keep much in the way of personal info on my PC anyways. I've heard rumours/stories (might not be anything more than that) of people getting refurbished drives and there is a lot of data easily restored from them.

i guess even if that's true the chances of it happening to you are slim to none anyways.

that's why you dont just reformat the hdd you have to "erase" it. and by that I mean writing the hdd with all 0s and 1's.

ppl are inconsiderate when it comes to personal data and do little to protect them
