Hiya,

I did see some news on TV and did a little research on the net and found some sources..

Let me know what you think about that:

End of the human race ? (http://www.thisisbristol.com/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=127638&command=displayContent&sourceNode=127637&contentPK=7002734)

From the sources:

The biggest threat to mankind was revealed yesterday to be a deadly supervolcano bubbling away under one of the world's most famous national parks. Vulcanologists say the seismic hotspot is ready to blow and will spell Armageddon for our planet.

The doomsday warning comes only a week after astronomers claimed an asteroid was on a lethal collision course with Earth and is expected to hit on March 21, 2004. The impact and aftershock was said to be enough to wipe out the entire human race.

Well i am also not that worried about the asteroid thingy since they always can be wrong but umm the activity with this volcano is really a bad thing.

Scared me...

yep, the cats should get their chance too. if it wasnt for the dinosaurs being so kind as to roll over for us, we wouldnt be typing to each other now. you wouldnt get a cat worrying about when 'matrix revolutions' is out when there's big ass volcanoes in their gardens

How many dooms-day threats are we up to now?
Asteroids, War, Earthquakes, Asteroids, Asteroids and then this....

If every threat is as bad as they say we ought not be here still (it's what I tell myself anyhow).

(Almost forgot the smiley.... :o )

Btw, researchers say that the next Ice-age is very much overdue as well, maybe we should place bets.

You know, to see what hits us first.

volcano/earthquake?
jesus?

I'd go with Jesus  , I like an underdog.

Anyhow, this is just an observation, but how come all the doomsday threats I can remember right now have been detected by American scientists?

If that happens then we will have to rename the equinox to something like the equiknocks.

This is a little more positive (http://yowusa.com/Archive/Aug2003/volcanism4/volcanism4.htm), it still says that there might be a boom but not that it is regular as clockwork.

I did a bit more of research as well and it appears that there are indications of this being a waning cycle in analyses made on the zircon and quartz layers.

Edit: And add this, the BBC documentary allegedly mainly used data from 1973 to make their prediction, Yellowstone erupted once albeit in smaller scale 160000 years ago, and another pretty brutal volcano has gone off 28 times the last 40000 years or so Lake Taupo, new Zeeland. (http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Taupo)

I'm not saying it isn't possible, but I'd say there's a fair chance of this not happening.

Well lets hope it's just some summer story for the press - you never know but they really start to report it on TV here lol odd.

Found another link:

http://www.volcanolive.com/volcanolive.html

http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/yvo/monitoring.html

if people want more info. I don't want to make panic etc - it's just very interesting what kind of dangers are "around us" ;)

This stuff is cool, just don't worry to much until it happens, or at least everyone who knows about these things says it will happen, and I mean soon, not some foggy "in the next mumblemumble years". Don't know about the astereoid, though. ;)

i saw a thing about the astaroid. the one thats closest to hitting us maybe in 2008, they were gonna nuke it but it might not work if its pouros

Snee

Another observation btw, it appears that the magnitude of the reported threat is is proportional to the the distance of the reporters to the volcano.

BBC talks about nuclear winter and America coated in molten lava, whereas I see American sites recommending you to stock up on filter masks and emergency supplies.

Edit: that wouldn't work very well against a stream of lava or far-below-zero temperatures, now would it?

Edit: i don't look at any religious sites btw, American or otherwise, if it says "the end times" and goes on about the bible, then I avoid it.

;) I am at peace with GOD.....even though I still do not think I will be going to Heaven(or whatever people want to call it).

There are People who have passed that I want to see.....and if we are all going to die at the same time and nobody will be left anyway.....well I have no problem with that.

Its some avatar that my little brother uses :) He hangs out in a lot of forums and picked that one up one day :P

I linked that "joke avatar" to a "user banned" page and believe me a lot of people did try to click it ;)

Btw. about that volcano stuff - I don't take it too serious but it's very interesting to see such things since normally people only talk about the NEO's (near earth objects) but it seems like such stuff is pretty scary too

thewizeard
09-16-2003, 08:57 PM
Yes i :o clicked it too. I tried to rename you K-lighter...

edit: about a year ago there was a warning about a possible collision. The calculations turned out to be a little inaccurate and the asteroid missed us by a few million kilometers. BUT that's still pretty close on a cosmic scale....

Well, what do you do when a boiler is about to blow? You do a controlled venting. Maybe we could build a conduit to the Pacific and create a giant penisula made out of cooling lava.

Have I got this right ?

An asteroid is going to smash into Yellowstone National Park, creating a hugh volcanic eruption. The lava flow will create a land bridge to Hawaii. The US, believing it is under attack by terrorists will launch it's nuclear missiles at random. The increased heat will melt the polar icecaps causing widespread flooding. The resulting dust cloud will blot out the sun, and trigger the next Ice Age.

Sounds like an interesting plot for a movie.
