Downloaded Knoppix 3.2 and Winlinux2003.
Looks great but don't use them cause can't get my USB ADSL modem to work and must confess I'm a Linux Newbee.

Today is your lucky day. I have just the distro for you.

50 megabytes of penguin power. A fully functional distrobution of linux with a gui and all. Check it out. Its called "Damn Small Linux" and it works. Its not the distro I use but Ive tried it before. Since you have a bandwitdh problem (dial up) then this might work well for you. Shouldnt take you too long to download 50 megs.

This is really a cool distribution. It runs diretly form the cd like knoppix. I lost my other disk so after telling you about it I decided to give it a go myslef, seeing as how it was only 50 megs. Im on it right now. It can download and install mozilla firebird and shockwave flash right automatically that way your not stuck with the crappy browser that comes with it.

If your looking to just play around with linux then you could use this. However I wouldnt recommend it as a primary distribution like red hat or freebsd. Its really not meant for that. Lets say your at a public computer and you dont have your laptop and their running crappy windows 95 or something. If you carry this disk around with you a lot then you could just pop it in the cd drive boot from it and be running linux in no time. That is of course if the group policy settings set by the admins dont restrict cd rom access. ;)

Since you never have used linux before then you may not be pleased with that distribution. Its a little more for advanced users. But still try it out because it will give you a feel for it. I highly recommend a more user friendly distro like red hat or mandrake or if you want to run from a cd then knoppix. I understand that downloading is a problem for you. If you really want to run linux without downloading then you could buy a boxed set and have it shipped to your house. Thats about the only way you can get linux "without" paying for it. :P

Anyway here is a list of common shell commands.

Certain type are free depending on who made it.

Besides getting a "boxed" set, all of linux is free. Its the technical support that you are charged for not the o.s. itself.
