Install xp first and when choosing how big you want a partition(s) leave some space for linux, how much space depends on how big your hard drive is and what you want to do with linux/xp. Then when xp is installed, install linux and it will set itself up in the free space, the linux boot loader should automatically detect the xp installation and automatically set up dual booting, (maybe with a tiny bit of configuration).
If you haven't chosen a linux distribution yet, then search this section of hte forum and you should find some recommendations, there are also links to help on linux.
