Look, I thiink we all know that rap and hip hop are possibly the most influencial genres in todays musicworld. well, maybe you dont agree, but im guessing you havnt heard any real albums. for instance, lamsey, i would like you to download the new outkast cd. instant classic. But also, if those of us that defend rap and hip hop just turn it into a flame war... its just going to end up bad. So how about we all respect eachothers opinions.. i will try, i have said stuff about limp bizkit and linking park, that fans probably dont like. But this bashing of rap and hip hop has got to stop.. Its here, and its here to stay. Its music.

Whether its Rap, RnB, Rock, Metal, Blues, Soul, Classical, pop, whatever.
What you like is a matter of personal taste and nothing is ever gonna change that.
The only point in the disscussion of the different genres is to open up others to a different type of music that they may not have considered before.
Flaming someone for their musical tastes is just sad.

In case anyone was wondering, I listen to all of the above genres.

Oh and BTW, thank god for slavery. Without it blues may not have devloped to the stage it is now and allowing for the birth of Rock n Roll (without it where would rock, metal, hip hop and rap have come from?)

OK slavery was a bit shitty but the music it spawned rulez!!!!

Mog, I don't agree with you about rap (although you've seen my shared folder, so you know that :P ) but I couldn't have said it better myself.

I am not a huge rap/hip hop fan but there is some good stuff out there. You mentioned outkast. Big Boi and Dre Present is a great album. The Roots have a couple of good albums and put on an amazing live show, if any one is interested. I also just got a copy of N.E.R.D. In Search of.. and I really like that album.

Something I forgot to add: The backup band on In Search Of is a group from Minnestoa called Spymob. They aren't rap or hip hop; it more like a weird Ben Folds/Steely Dan infulenced rock band. But they are excellent on both the NERDs release as well as their own upcoming release, on the Neptunes lable, Sitting Around Keeping Score (available now on soulseek ;) )

@ dingoBaby

You should of just edited to include what you forgot.

What you like is a matter of personal taste and nothing is ever gonna change that.

That's what everyone should remember.

People grew up around different types of music. I grew up with my brother listening to rap, so i've been hearing it all my life. I happen to like rap for that reason. I'm used to it. I can relate to it.

all the best music is invented and performed by black people. jazz? invented by blacks. blues? invented by blacks. rock n roll? soul? funk? ska/reggae? hip hop? invented by blacks.

and the mainstream (i.e. mostly white people) is always the last to embrace the new music. they say "oh, listen to that noise. THAT ISN'T MUSIC." that's what they said about rock n roll. whites are so slow and so unhip. imho, black music breaks new ground, white people just spend decades clinging to the leftover remains of music that used to be revolutionary (i.e. rock n roll is 50 years old and getting more stale & boring every year).

WHOA!! Let's NOT make this a racial war, I mean come on this is MusicWorld. U should be a little more cautious about what u say... as for people downfalling rap/hip-hop, im not sure why cause many new age rock bands have derived from these musical cultures and altered them to their own fashion. Music is music and will always be music, be it rap or rock or even country.

country sells better... :D probably because a lot of the rap is dl on the internet.

It has no sense debating musical preferences. If people don't like it, they just don't like it. I think rap is hardly original, why do they need samples from other music artists all the time... but hey ... that's my opinion. i have some rap and i even still like the 1st rap hit a lot... Sugarhill gang. Also can't understand why they all do it together all the time..?? lil' is playing with them all same as Jay-Z & co... Also think that everyone can rap, you me, him... everybody.., a lot of people can not sing at all... but hey, again that's my opinion... If you love Rap... i won't argue you, cause.... hey ... that's your opinion... i always keep wondering why those people keep talkin while another one is singing beautifull, remember Eminem talking through the lovely and beautifull voice of Dido... but hey again.... that's my opinion and i gues you know by now what i think of opinions...

You can't argue those....

I really have no right to say anything like this, as i am a white kid who has never known the hardships that black people have gone through, but here goes. I think that music is inspired by hardship. The slaves in Brazil, Blues etc.. was largely influence by the shit that was done to african americans. Im not saying they have some amazing musical talent.. i mean its just unfortunate that Africans have been the most discriminated group in the last century. Police brutality and economic racism imo helped rap in the 80's and early 90's. So if any of you say rap is not original, you need to get your head checked. Listen to an NWA or Ice Cube album. That's more real than any music that comes out today. It comes from real experience. Songs like Ice Cubes 'Endangered Species' make me feel so angry and make you think. So say what you want, by IMO, rap, atleast the early stuff, is more emotional and real than anything ever created. Say what you want. That is my opinion.

in what particular way do you think it was bullshit?

i just think there has been a pattern for the last century, where blacks create a totally exciting new style of music and then many non-blacks dismiss it as "nothing but noise" until successful white musicians actually start performing it. there just have not been enough Vanilla Ices and Eminems yet, to help rap gain the level of acceptance that it will eventually achieve. rap is already huge, but it will still get bigger in the next several years.

excuse me if it's not polite to mention race, but i don't think it is something that can be ignored as if it isn't an issue. of course people aren't going to say "i don't like that music because it's too black," but i think it's an underlying factor anyway.

Read what I wrote, its more abridged.. what you wrote was a little to raw and pretty much said that black people are the only good musicians. I wrote that they happen to be write good songs/create good music a lot of the time because of the enviornment.

nah, that's not what i meant. black people aren't the only good musicians, it's just that they typically lead the major changes in style, and it takes a while for the new styles to completely saturate white culture. it's not that they do it better, but they do it first. "good" and "new" are two different things.

if the old pattern actually does apply to rap, it could be possible that 20 or 30 years from now rap will be going strong, but it will be performed mainly by white musicians (and black musicians will have moved on to something newer). there won't be any argument at all about whether or not rap is "music." white rap wouldn't be worse than black music, but it would be old-fashioned compared to whatever the black musicians are doing at that point.
