All leaders whether elected or unelected are subject to the vagaries of world economics and events beyond their control.

I can't speak for the veracity of the resume Hobbes has posted - but if half is true GW does appear to be a tad dodgy.

However, almost by definition, politicians tend to be a trifle dodgy. The obstacle course that is mainstream politics tends, through an almost Darwinian natural selection process, to favour those who cheat and lie.

One comment I will make about GW, he appears to be the unluckiest President in a long time. Whether it be, economic factors, natural disasters, disorder or international turbulence, he and the American people have endured far more than what could be considered a fair share during his tenure.

Bill Clinton, on the other hand, was a consumate rascal. Yet he was one of the luckiest Presidents in a long time.

Given, in my view, that all polticians are of questionable parentage, to say the least, I would plump for the lucky one every time.

Someone once said that people get the government they deserve ( I paraphrase).

The American people will chose who is to "rule" them and then have to live with it. I will be stunned if it is not a Democrat. However they are a people who seem to value certain things way above others. Sabre rattling and jingoism being high on the list of worthwhile traits. So perhaps I won't be surprised (even tho I will still be stunned) if President Bush is re-elected.

I suspect he will get re-elected, as to be beaten he needs opposition.

This close to the US Presidential election last time; the name Gore was as well known to me as Bush...

This time around, i couldnt name you 1 of the 10 or so Democratic Candidates.

It's still early. Last election, the only reason you heard of Gore was because he was the VP, he didn't really have to face any other candidates from his own party. Basically, he was just a continuation of an incumbent administration.

This time, there will have to be some time spent on deciding who the serious candidates are. Howard Dean (http://www.deanforamerica.com/) is pretty much the front runner, but keep an eye on Wes Clark (http://www.clark04.com). If he can convince people that he's just as strong on domestic policy, as his experience would suggest he is in foreign and defense policies, he may end up being the only real shot at beating Bush.

What do you think the American people will decide on El Jefe. Will they look at the issues like the economy, international relations, employment etc.

Or will they look at the fact that Bush has led them thro' a particularly difficult time and think he has provided us (the American people) with strong decisive leadership and we want him to continue his policies.

I genuinely have no idea, however I suspect that they will think of this as a single issue campaign.

Well, it depends. Americans have an incredibly short attention span, IMO. So anything is possible. But Bush won't make the same mistakes his father did while campaigning. He won't dismiss the current economic issues. So given that and the fact that 9/11 is still fresh in everybodies minds, the democrats don't stand a chance unless they field a candidate that people feel is at least as strong on foreign and defense policies.

Dean, the former vermont governor, is really popular amongst democrats because he's closer to the democrat party's core, but if he wins the nomination, I'd say the presidential election is lost. He has no military backround and little foreign policy backround. Clark is probably the best bet, but he started late, so he's got alot of fundraising to do before he can be considered amongst the top candidates.

i have mixed feelings about clark entering the race. i think he has the greatest chance of winning, but im afraid that the democrats will rip eachother apart before karl rove even gets his turn. If somehow Clark manages to win the primary unscathed.. he has a very good chance of beatin the hell out of bush. it seems all we care about is the military and since we call the french weasels.. then i think its fitting if the truth came out about bush. I mean, if clark can just come out and call bush a little wuss that wouldnt even serve in the national guard after all the hard work his daddy put in, while clark was a fucking general.. something gore should have done but didnt. now clark really has to capitalize on the opportunity.
