NAV 2004 - Watch out for what LiveUpdate is doing on the Int
from a warez board:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi there.

Like most of you guys, I was really anxious to try Norton AntiVirus 2004. The keygen took a little while to come out, but it worked fine for the activation scheme with the TMG release.

I started using it and noticed that LiveUpdate was checking for updates very frequently! Too frequently. It is not possible to have an update to download every 2 hours or so.

So, when chatting a while in IRC, someone told me that there were users being banned by Symantec (deactivating the program makes it totally unuseful). It seems that LiveUpdate is prepared to do much more than it is supposed to: besides updating, it also seems to do the dirty job of checking activations against their database.

From a Symantec perspective, this is very intelligent: you would find suspicious if any other application would be trying to go to the Internet, but not LiveUpdate...

My advice until some hack or fix is released: block LiveUpdate access to the Internet in your firewall OR go back to NAV 2003 until all these initial problems are solved (my choice!).

I hope this is somehow useful for the community (I thought it was...).

Like i said before NAV 2004 SUCKS (http://www.klboard.ath.cx/index.php?showtopic=67710) i stick with AVG and if i want to install a good antivirus ----- NOD32,not resource hoger, fast scans, and Take a Look (http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?eset.xml)

Hi,
I downloaded Norton Antivirus 2004 Pro from Sharereactor and it works perfectly, no liveupdate checking every 2 hours and no problems with slowed down computer(had mcafee before so im used to it if it is slowing down)

Maybe I'm a lucky one

It took me ages to get the key generator to function correctly, after realising I had downloaded 2004 Professional trial, I downloaded the 155MB BIN and after a couple of tweaks, it worked fine. It also do not have the problem of it updating at a regular basis.

Thanks for that info. I got NAV 2004 in my download folder yet o be installed. But, I reckon NAV 2003 takes up too much memory and decided I'll do without a AV program offline. Since I'm online almost all the time, I tink I'll stick with online browsers.

To much hassle, like SH said, just use nod 32 or avg. NAV is going to hell in a hand basket. But i do wonder if the other av compnaies will follow behind what symantec is doing. if so we are in for a fun ride into virusville.

ok, i just restarted my computer to find norton not working properly, I think Symantec found out I had a fake code and shut it down, does anyone have any other ideas for a virus scan???

Thanks

I've just installed AVG Antivirus and ive run a symantec security test and it cannot find a virus scan installed, ive used the EICAR test file and it works fine, do I need to worry about anything??

Thanks
