Basically, I got an HP pavillion 750 running windows xp2002 version5.1 build2600. My operating system, according to an info utility is windows_NT. I have heard that hp has used fixed-up, patched up beta versions of xp on some of their computers but my system runs well, so I think I've got the real xp. Here is my question. After formatting recently and installing an up-to-date factory bundle(7 disks to be exact) I have had little or no problems but since nothing was done manually I don't know which patches are installed and more importantly, whether or not sp1 is installed. Under add/remove programs it only says "hotfix kb832980&kb824146" Is there some command line things I can do in dos to figure out which ones are installed? Because I'm afraid If I go to the microsoft site and just start installing patches it might overwrite some good ones or something.

Hmm, you could try this to see whether SP1 is installed.
Simply right-click on "My Computer" and hit properties, if you have SP1 installed, it will say something like this:

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition/Professional Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 1 -> only appears if you have SP 1 installed.

Also, when you go to MS update they scan your comp and only list the patches/updates that you don't already have.

all those cdkeys on most website for xp will prevent Windows Update from working... I read on another thread about this.

That doesn't seem to an issue in this case.

Although I have to wonder...7 CDs? What did they bundle in with that, the Library of Congress?

Cloker, if this occurs again or if u want to bypass microsoft and confirm the follow these steps:
Download xp_hotfix_prompt.vbs (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_hotfix_prompt.vbs) and save it to your hard drive. Double click the VBS file you downloaded and you'll be prompted to enter the KBxxxxxx or Qxxxxxx number of the Hotfix. No checking is done to see if the Hotfix is actually installed on your system, so its your responsibility to ensure that it is.

Note: I cannot guarantee that this will work for ALL HOTFIXES. Using the tools at my disposal, I have determined how the majority of checking is done for the presence of a particular hotfix. This mechanism may not be the same for all Hotfixes and could change at any time.
