When ever i shut down Xp Pro it saves myy settings fine then moves on to the Windows is shutting down stage then it takes at least 5 minutes for it to power off. i have to hold my finger on the power button for 15 seconds for it to shutdown in a hurry, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Dont hold the button down, thats not good for the comp. Its normal for it to take that long go to tweakxp.com (http://tweakxp.com) this may help.

Take a newly installed version xp that has just been installed and shut it down. It will shutdown just like that in a snap.

Now take a version of xp that you have all your favorite apps and settings on and try shutting it down, it will take a long time. Computers running xp seem to shut down faster when they dont have hardly any other programs installed. But by the time you put the service packs, applications, etc. on it it takes a while to shut down.

If you cant wait that long then just hold your finger on the power on button like you said before and it will shutdown instantly. Unless your working on a document or project that you didnt save, its not gonna hurt your pc or o.s. to turn it off like that. :)

I disagree with the above.
On my machine running XP pro with a lot of programs running, shutdown takes about 15 seconds.
The entire restart cycle takes 35-40 seconds.

Make sure that you are not clearing the page file at shutdown.
That can slow things down dramatically.

Get and run "XP Antispy".

This turns off a load of apps in XP that you dont need (and in some cases certainly dont want) running in the background.....speeds up the loading/shutting down.

xp takes me about 15 seconds or so to shut down usually
although if i've just been working the computer hard (playing a game, encoding video etc) it usually takes a little while longer...

On topic. To speed up shutdown, and XP on the whole, disable all non essential services. Goto - blackviper (http://blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm)'s site.

Furst of all you cant disable services like antivirus, web server, ftp, and other services that you need.

The reason I made the analogy before is because a newly installed system with none of those services on it will shut down a lot quicker. The antivirus service alone will delay any computer from shutting down quickly, now add that to about 15 other services that some people, unlike you, do need and youll have to wait for those services to be shut down accordingly.

And the fact of the matter is I could care less. I havent shut my main computer down in about a month and most of the times go longer than that before its even shutdown.

What are you trying to conserve energy or something by shutting your computer down every night? Are you that broke? I dont even shut down my boxes enough to give the type of time frames that it takes for my boxes to shutdown like you people are giving.

Do you sit there with a stopwatch? <_<

no, but we dont sit and give bad advice either. we're saying how long it takes to shutdown so that he can recognise something might be wrong and get it sorted - and not by just "holding down the power button" as you suggested on the first page. have you given up on the forum altogether, as i see that as well as your member title your also posting crack links now as well <_<

Actually, yes I have.

I'm interested in how my system works.

For example, when I first read about BootVis, the author of the article claimed that he cut 30-40 seconds off his boot time.
I wanted to see if this was true or just exaggeration so I timed my boot cycle before and after using the program.
It does work, BTW.

My backround is with racing machines and you simply can't afford to hope that something will work- you have to know. Just taking someone's word doesn't cut it.
Testing is the only way to know.

That's how I know for a fact that clearing your page file at shutdown makes a big difference.
I timed it.

You really don't have a clue, do you? You make yourself out to be this tech savvy linux user, but you're completely clueless. Who the hell suggested shutting down your av? I posted a link to a great site that explains clearly what services can safely be stopped.

shn
09-21-2003, 01:22 AM
Well for starters I wouldnt put linux in this if I were you. Whenever I do tell my linux system to shutdown, which is not that often, it shuts down immediately. However one thing you will see in verbose mode when you shut down a linux system is all the services that its shutting down. Whether they be inetd services or xinetd services it tells you that they have to be shut down accordingly.

The problem with xp is that it lets the services have full control over when they shut down and how. If a service stalls the its not going to shut down as fast.

Linux has a "service" (inetd xinetd) that takes control and shuts down all services whether they want to shut down or not, thus, shutting the system down cleanly and quickly.

So yes I do have a clue and you obviously dont have a clue that I could care less about what you are talking about. :)

Do you have a nVidia graphics card? One of the programs on it (NvSvc) makes to take a while to shutdown. You can shut it off with startup manager.

What Linux does/doesn't do is irrelevant here.
