That 'gold' looks a bit scabby. and I don't think that guy realises how heavy real gold is. I doubt if he would be smiling like that if he tried to hold a real gold ingot that way.

You americans gonna be rich just like that. Stealing gold, oil, killing innocent people and pretending you didn't shot first, hmmm, you must feel proud. Congrats...

A gold ingot that size would weigh about 30 kilos.

This kinda reminds me of Die Hard 3 , when Samual L Jackson gets that gold bar and uses it 2 break the car window, and then he leaves the gold bar in the back of car 4 the guy 2 find

Do any of you guys have any justifcation for the assumption that this gold is being stolen?

Thought not.

Here's a version of the story. (http://www.strategypage.com/gallery/default.asp?target=goldentruck.htm)

I have to say I am extremelly dubious about this whole thing. If that is gold then the ingots must be hollow. The whole thing just doesn't look right.

a jeweller i know once told me (in the pub :D) that all the gold ever found would fit into an area the size of a football (soccer) goal area (square).

i dont know much about this story, but if the jeweller was right (and its not impossible that he's wrong, if you know what i mean :huh:) then that would be a shitload of gold to missing, like even on a world scale. just a thought :rolleyes:.

A truck that size would carry about 12 tonnes of oil. It looks like the tank is about a quarter full of 'gold'. If it really was gold, it would weigh about 65-70 tonnes. How is it that the axle isn't bent, the springs aren't at the bottom etc?

The Bank of England has a total gold reserve of 700 tonnes, at least a chap I know within the banking sector told me that.

According to World Gold Council (http://www.gold.org/value/stats/statistics/archive/index.php) as of this month, total world gold reserves are 32,092 tons.
This does not even include the countless tons that have gone into jewelry, gold plating, etc.

All that is needed now is the density of pure Gold, and it can be worked out

Anyone know it, perchance? ;)

"Countless" in the sense that I don't know how you could possibly gather it all together and determine a weight.

A cubic meter of gold will weigh 19.3 tonnes

sorry, got caught away the bored thread :D - @clocker, according to the jeweller, it was 'all the gold ever found' :huh: , so i was wondering just what the mass would be roughly

Illuminati
09-21-2003, 04:36 PM
Density = mass / volume

Rearranged -> Volume = Mass / Density

Mass = 32092 E6 kg
Density = 19.3 E6 kgm^-3 (Thanks for working it out so I could make sure, clocker ;))
Volume = V

V = 32092 / 19.3
= 1663 m^3

Work out the size of the net yourself ;)

clocker
09-21-2003, 04:36 PM
Who knows?

Just using the verifiable gold reserves though the figure comes to about 1663 cubic meters.

Somewhat larger than a soccer goal, I should imagine.

pol
09-21-2003, 04:40 PM
i cant visualize 1663 c/metres :huh: - what do you reckon its the equivalent of ?

Looking at the original pictures.......look at the end of the Bar he is holding in the 4th one..

To me that looks like Gold Paint flaking off something Brown..such as a clay brick. This would explain why he appears to find it so light.

Looks like another propaganda story, in which we will never find out the truth.

clocker
09-21-2003, 04:56 PM
RF, you may be right and we'll never know.

But... that's a awfully weird shape for a clay brick. Not really too useful for stacking, is it?

Also, I don't know if you've ever seen gold ingots, but at the Denver Mint you used to be able to view some ( probably not anymore, with all the new security restrictions) and they are surprisingly crude looking.

Not trying to be argumentitive here, it is possible that this is phoney, but I think it's just as likely that it's not, based on the pictures posted.

http://www.dprkorea-trade.com/metals/gold.jpgHere is a picture of some gold I use as paperweights.
Although I don't like to think so, it looks like gold spray paint.

Real gold should not be lumpy, as we are talking about processed bars which should have formed to the shape of the mold. There should be no convex bulges as we see in picture 4.

The stuff is gold colored, but it lacks the lustre of real gold. Well, if they polished it, it would look better, right? Wrong. The reason gold is a precious metal is that it does not oxidize (rust) so it will last forever.

As for the weight, I think you guys are correct. To hold a bar in that way, he would have to have his elbow tucked against his torso for support.

as has already been pointed out, gold is approx 19.3 times more dense than water

one cubic metre of water weighs 1 metric tonne, therefore 1 cubic metre of gold weighs 19.3 metric tonnes

quite a bit of weight (mass)...

wow a capitalist pig and a nazi

you didn't do a very good job at convincing to us what your government did what they've done and why.

if you've done anything at all it's that you've reinforced our stereotypical comments.

Americans aren't there to help to build Iraq, they are there to rob them dry and deplete them of their wealth. It's not stereotypical, it's a fact.

Gold looks dodgey to me, second I dont think some one like saddam (regardless of how idiotic the americans think he is) would have all his gold driven around or hidden in a truck, he had all his gold either in his secret underground bunkers or had it melted down and made stuff out of it. Knowing the greedy b*sterd the only thing he packed with him when he ran off was his gold. Besides I dont think the Iraqi people have gold on there mind's right now, I would think they're thinking where the hell is the electricity and water supplies :P

I am not anti american , but I dont approve what the american gov'n is doing to help peace in the middle east.

Americans are only looking after their political future and interests. It will be foolish to think that America government would send it's army, get rid of Saddam, free Iraqi ppl, and politely retreat and swallow all that expenses on its own. Bush has other plans for Iraqi oil and its wealth and using that wealth to rebuild Iraq is the last in the list.
