My friend keeps downloading the haunting in connecticut to preview as research purposes but everytime he downloads it the AVI is encoded. Some even tell him to buy QVEE. How can I decode?

Is it possible that an avi can be tracked by the authorities?
thanks

what about for the others 2 versions of it that dont say anything about qvee?
they try taking him to like a microsoft codec page?

I dont believe this, 1 says go to cryptoguardian.com to get a code to type in. (never works)
1 says buy qvee
1 doesnt even render.

I think their fake and will just tell him to delete them

I tried twice downloading a movie that required a password/to go to some site etc.

Spent around 8 hours learning how to crack the password.

One ended up not even being the movie, but some porn movie.. severely out of sync even. The other was the shittiest cam job I have ever laid my eyes on.

So I would say odds are against this being legit.

I did partially learn how to crack password protected archives though, so at least some good came out of it :)

Torrents that want to signup/vote for something or prompt to download a special media are most likely either fakes or scams. Ask your friend to download and install Combined community codec pack from http://www.cccp-project.net/. This should let him play avi files encoded using xvid, divx and other popular compression schemes without problems.

The top google hits for "qvee media player" or "qvee codec" all link to you posting on forums about it. I doubt the file your friend is trying to open is legit.

Well to be honest, I don't think there is even a "Release" for it from any scene or non-scene group...

http://www.vcdq.com/index.php

If it ain't indexed here, it's highly unlikely it's available. Which I see no release anywhere that doesn't look fishy.

yeah sounds like a dud. Ive seen this plenty of times nothing is gonna make it work its just some scam to make you buy some crappy media player that doesnt really do anything. try getting that video from somewhere more reliable.
